Ewwwww! Not.

whitebait-1The other night I made what I think of as a good old (faux) Mexican fry-up: Mince with onions, mushrooms, kidney beans, chili sauce and plenty of grated cheese, all over rice.  And it was fine.  But something was missing.  So I looked through the fridge, and my eyes fell on a jar of gherkins.

Now, I know this is wrong.  I love pickles and gherkins and anything chutneyish, but I mean, come on.  Gherkins and the above?  Sick!

Until I tried it.  I chopped up the gherkins and sprinkled them on top, and they were the perfect garnish.  The acidity adds a nice punch to the dish and makes it much less filling than otherwise.

Of course, when I told my friends, they thought I was nuts. But then, I can say that their habits of Marmite, cheese, and potato chip sandwiches are equally revolting.

Any food combinations you love, but others find gross?

But people who do not know me are surprised to see me as a real person I guess.

Jean, my very favorite sandwich when I go to England is cheese & chutney. Just delicious.

@Marcella – That’s gross. Eggs and sugar? Very gross. Bleeyetch!

@Victoria S – That’s like cheddar cheese and apple pie, which is something no one understands except Americans. I think it’s awesome.

@LinnieGayl – Okay, PB & Pickle? Double yuck. But grilled cheese and W Sauce? Considering many mac & cheese recipes use W sauce, I don’t think yours is a stretch. The Kiwis like to put pickle (like, chutney pickle, not whole pickle) on cheese and eat it plain; same principle, I’d say.

The other day I dipped hot cross buns in sweet chili sauce, and it actually worked out pretty well – considering the person across from me was gagging.

Victoria, I can’t even imagine peanut butter and mayo sandwiches. Yuck! I think I’d rather try them with dill pickles :))

I guess that’s not too much different than topping Mexican food with pico de gallo. It’s very acidic, too: jalapenos, fresh tomatoes, fresh cilantro, onions and vinegar.

I have a friend who eats peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches. I love peanut butter sandwiches, and also love dill pickles, but the combination sounds revolting.

On the other hand, most of my friends are revolted by my habit of dipping grilled cheese sandwiches into Worcestershire sauce. Yummy!

I love Ginger Snaps and Cheddar cheese. The snaps HAVE to be the hard ones made by Sweetzel ( they come in the orange and black box).

I have a sister who eats Peanut Butter and Mayo sandwiches! Talk about Ewwwwwwww :-)

@Lynn – I often combine fruit with chocolate – raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, oranges… anything. Somehow never tried lemon & chocolate – I’ll try that one soon.

My brother always eats his boiled eggs with sugar – yuck!

I like to put cheese – the older the better – on raisin bread, and banana in my chili (Mexican fry-up?).

Lynda X – Mmmm. Love bread & butter pickles with anything.

Lynn – That doesn’t sound odd at all. Um, chocolate-covered strawberries?

For whatever reason, a lot of folks I know get grossed out by the notion of chocolate mixed with fruit. Personally, I love it. Lemon + chocolate is my favorite combo. I once had a birthday cake that was dark chocolate with lemon filling. Best cake ever!

I love American cheese, with mayo, on Italian (or any crusty) bread with bread and butter pickles. Great sandwich!
