They need to bring this back. Now.

VM50816-04I remember when I learned music in school, my teachers drew stave lines on the blackboard with a handy little wire gadget in which you insert five pieces of chalk, parallel to each other, and hey presto!  5 parallel lines = music stave.

But times have changed.  And now we use whiteboards instead of blackboards. And no one has a handy little wire gadget that holds whiteboard markers instead of chalk.  Which means I have to draw them by hand because metre sticks have gone out. And it’s messy. Which offends my sensibilities.

Of course, if I had unlimited budget and a very short wishlist for next year I could look like that lady at the top and buy one of those boards that have permanent staves, except bigger.  But I don’t have unlimited budget and my priority wishlist is looooooooong and my classroom is small and that’s just not in the cards.

They need to bring those wire thingies back.  Sometimes, simple was it.

What would you bring back if you could?

Hey Jean:
Have you ever thought of duct taping 5 markers together? (maybe I’ve been married too long to an engineer =)

Lee B, sounds like Colorforms. They were around when I was a kid and my daughter had them, too.

I’d like to bring back Roy Rogers restaurants, especially the
cole slaw.

Thanks for your suggestions, Lisa#2 & Nikki H. I haven’t done either of your suggestions this year because my whiteboard is disgracefully small, and enough of it is taken up with the permanent stuff like our school’s blackboard configuration (Do Now, Learning Outcome, Vocabulary, etc.). However, what I see for next year is a portable, or movable whiteboard with the permanent markers (like you said, Lisa#2, I’d have to be careful with the tape). Or, just cut a really wooden stick as a ruler.

But the wire thingies have nostalgia! Never mind. Moving with the times.

there is vinyl tape that can be used to make lines on a white board. It comes in different colors and widths and is pretty permanent as long as you don’t rub too hard when cleaning the board.

I can’t think of anything right off hand that I would like to bring back, except maybe a couple of lipsticks that Estee Lauder quit making, and a particular style of tennis shoe by Timberland, but I wanted to tell you something about your white board stave. I have, in the past, taken a portable white board (dry erase board) and used a permanent marker on it to write something that I wanted to be, well, permanent. For a while I used a rather small one (like 8 X 10) with a line I drew down the middle for a list of sorts. Later I took a larger one and drew in handwriting lines so the students could see the formation of cursive letters and they could practice on it. The possibilities are endless. And they are not so expensive at the discount store. So you could make your own, if you are so inclined.

Oh, I develop strong loyalties to products, and get really irritated when they are discontinued. In the past year I’ve had both my body moisturizer and hair gel be discontinued. A few years ago, my absolutely favorite sheets were discontinued. I’d bring all of them back if I could.

One of my favorite toys was little plastic shapes that you could put down on a special board and create different pictures. I can’t remember what they were called but I so loved playing with that educational toy.

Oh, and bikes with banana seats.
