The Summer Anthem

It’s early, but I’m calling it:  Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” is going to be the Song of the Summer.

Every summer has its song that becomes The Hit, with catchy lyrics and a dance-inducing beat.  In 1996, Entertainment Weekly published their 100 Greatest Summer Songs.  Since then there’s been the iconic, subtle, and sensuous songs “Hot in Herre” and “Thong Song” by Nelly and Sisqo, respectively.

Right now, I’m really feeling “California Gurls.”  It’s been in my head for days, and on replay on my iPod. But I’m interested in hearing your thoughts.  What do you think will be the song of the summer?  And what’s your favorite song of summers gone by?

Personally, I cannot stand “California Gurls” (don’t know why), but it’s definitely making the rounds here in wintry Central Boondock, NZ. Unquestionably a, if not the, summer anthem.

I think, since this is the summer of soccer, the anthem should be Waka Waka by Shakira(official anthem of the World Cup).

A few years ago the summer anthem was gnarls barkley’s “Crazy”, and a bit before that it was Counting Crows’ “Accidentally in Love” (from Shrek). Those songs still make me feel like summer, even if it’s in the middle of a snowstorm.

I couldn’t stand the song when I saw her on the MTV Movie Awards (watched to see Sandra B). Thank God I had it taped, and I was able to zap the rest when I thought my ears would bleed. Kate Perry drives me as batty as Gaga does.

I think you’re right about California Gurls being this summer’s anthem. The lyrics scream summer and the melody is so catchy it’s almost impossible not to dance to it.
