The seemingly endless technical problems at AAR
On Sunday, after two of the plugins we use for comments and the forums were updated, five months of forums vanished and the forums themselves wouldn’t function properly. I spent all day Sunday trying to fix it but it was beyond my expertise. Finally, on Monday morning, our tech guy answered his email and was able to fix it although it meant losing everything on the site that had been entered in the prior 24 hours. Welcome to my world!
AAR is over 30 years old and, over the years, it’s been switched to different–and at the time better–softwares, hosts, and technical help. Its pride and joy–our extensive database–is full of iffy code and routinely pulls all the site’s memory when several people are accessing it. Ten years ago, we moved the site to WordPress and while many things about that have been good, unfortunately the theme our designer picked has turned out to be not great. To move to another more stable theme would be expensive–it would require reprogramming most of the site. WordPress also relies on plugins and they don’t always play well together. The site is more stable than a house of cards but it’s not as stable as I wish it were.
I realize that it is frustrating for our readers when the site is slow or doesn’t work. I’m sure there are those who have abandoned us because of our technical problems. To those of you who are sticking around, I say a heartfelt thank-you. And to those of you who donate I send my deepest gratitude. Without your support, we wouldn’t be here.
Here’s hoping we have a spell where nothing goes wrong!
I’m so happy you are back working again!! I miss my daily fix!!
Thanks!
I wish I had the skills to help you. Unfortunately, I’m more of a tech user than a tech engineer. And tech is constantly evolving so I feel for anyone who has to keep up with the changes. I appreciate the hard work you guys are doing to keep this site up and running. I’ve been following the site for a long time and I understand that occasionally the site needs some down time and repairs to continue to deliver the content we love. Don’t worry about losing us. You’re the best review site out there. Thank you.
When things go wrong, I tend to assume it’s my fault and try again later. But I love this site, and I’ll always keep trying!
I feel the same way – as long as the site is around, I will visit. When I settle down in the evening and open my laptop to surf the Internet, this is always my first site. I have gotten used to AAR going down occasionally and I can wait patiently for it to come back up. I am so sorry about all the technical difficulties – it sounds frustrating and time consuming. I really appreciate all of your hard work and feel this is the most balanced and helpful romance novel review site on the Internet!
Thank you. That’s lovely.
I will hang with you guys through thick and thin! You are my “first check” every day after work! I know it’s frustrating for you, but those of us who have been around forever understand.
Thank you!
I’m so sorry this has been happening to AAR and it is taking so much of your time. It must be like trying to maintain a classic automobile that you still have to drive 25 miles to work and back every day. It’s so much more than checking the oil and keeping air in the tires.
That’s a great analogy–I’d add it’s like trying to maintain a classic car you are also trying to convert to a Tesla!
I love my computer, except with I loathe it.
A couple of weeks ago, I couldn’t download AAR and assumed you were being held up for ransomware, so I thought, “Well, that’s that.”
I was not surprised at how much I missed you guys and was so happy when you came back. I will stick with you all for as long as there is electricity and I am able to operate a computer. Thank you for all your effort on this stellar site.
PS Are you going to review Carla Kelly’s “Her Smile”?
I don’t think we rate for ransomware! Although the amount of spammers who try and hack us and/or post spam is astonishing to me.
I can always wait calmly for the site to get fixed, I really like AAR for its labels, reviews and sexiness ratings. The problem with other romance blogs is that they are not as detailed and it takes a lot to get a decent guide to the content of the book.
Another site may be more stable but a review that says “this book is great and deep” is of little use that does not inform me if I want to read it or not.
I’m so sorry! I’m not very tech savvy and I’m terribly spoiled by having my own tech support people (husband and children) to turn to for every problem I run into. I can’t imagine trying to keep a big website working. Hugs and many, many thanks for all you do.
So sorry to hear this is how you’ve spent the last couple of days!
