The Perfect Chocolate Milk?
Yes, I’m on a new food quest. This time, I’m looking for the perfect glass of chocolate milk. Not hot chocolate, mind you (that will come next winter, I’m sure), but cold chocolate milk.
About a month ago, I developed a craving for chocolate milk. I figure there are worse things I could crave, so headed out to the store to pick up some ready-made chocolate milk. Yuck! The store-brand I bought just didn’t taste appealing at all, and went down the drain.
The next day, I headed back to the store to look for syrups or powders that could be added to milk. There are an incredible number of hot chocolate mixes one can purchase, but nowhere near the number of things to put in cold milk.
So far, I’ve tried Hershey’s syrup (okay, but not great), Ghirardelli’s sweet ground chocolate (a bit too chocolatey for me), Cadbury’s Drinking Chocolate (absolutely yummy, but had to buy online and was pricey), and Ovaltine classic malt mix.
So far, for me, the Ovaltine classic malt mix is the winner. It’s relatively inexpensive, has some vitamins added in, and mixes very quickly into the milk. (I have to add the other powders to a bit of hot water first, and turn them into a syrup before adding them to milk.) I like the taste of the Ovaltine, as it reminds me a bit of old fashioned malted milk shakes. However, it’s not perfect.
Do any of you like chocolate milk? If so, what’s your secret to great chocolate milk?
Amazing post will be posting this on my weblog today maintain up the excellent function.
I don’t know where you live, but there is a Jersey cow dairy here in San Antonio called Promised Land Dairy, that makes amazing chocolate milk. I could drink this stuff for hours straight. I know they use cocoa powder when mixing it. Jersey cow milk is supposed to be far more tasty than Holstein milk. Try finding some Jersey milk and mixing it with your favorite milk mix. Also, shake, don’t stir the mix and milk together. Otherwise you get lumps. :(
JMM, I love Carnation Instant Breakfasts! Need to stock up again. I’ve never heard of the Borden Kid Builder Chocolate milk. Will have to look for it.
Lynn, that’s a great suggestion to mix pre-made chocolate milk (will try Quik) with regular white milk.
Carol, I tried the Horizon Organic at your suggestion, and it was quite good. It was horribly expensive at the place I purchased it, so am going to have to look for other retailers.
Caryl, I haven’t tried silk Chocolate…will give it a try.
Thanks, everyone!
Another alternative is Silk Chocolate Soy milk…yum!
Horizon Organic Chocolate Milk is fabulous. No mixing, just pour it out of the carton into your glass and drink. I get the 1%.
I looove chocolate milk. The love it so much I don’t allow myself to have it because I’ll go crazy on it kind of love. Now I’ve been craving chocolate milk since you posted this. Not fair! :)
When I was a kid I was all over the Hershey’s milk chocolate powder. The instructions say to add it to water, but I always ignored that and added it to milk. The only problem was that I’d have to heat a small amount of milk to get the powder to dissolve, then add a bunch of ice cold milk. Kind of a pain, but I loved it.
You’re probably looking for a mix-at-home option, but I’ve found that for me, nothing compares to the pre-made Quik chocolate milk. Because it’s so rich, I often mix half Quik with half regular white milk (skim or lowfat) and it still tastes pretty darned good. Still, it’s a treat at our house because of the expense and the sugar.
Carnation Instant Breakfast. Wonderful.
Also, try Borden Kid Builder Chocolate Milk. Lowfat.
We’re big fans of chocolate milk in our house. My favorite is the Hershey’s syrup. One of my little one’s loves strawberry milk and calls it pink milk. I don’t know if they’d drink milk if I didn’t add something to it.
Haven’t had chocolate milk in years, but I’d probably go with a syrup added into milk.
