Summer Shoes
I am a flip-flop girl. Despite the warnings I’ve seen and heard about the dangers of wearing them, I can’t help but be skeptical. They can’t possibly be as bad as those stiletto heels I see women wearing. I have a white pair of Old Navy flip-flops that I wear pretty much daily, with no ill effects. However, because I’ve been wearing them so often, they’re dirty and worn, so I’ve been looking for some new summer sandals.
In the end, I wound up getting two more pairs of the flip-flops (white again, and lavender). At $2.50 each, you can’t beat the price — and considering I’ve been wearing my current pair frequently for over a year, they’re worth a lot more than that. I love shoes, but on a day-to-day basis I’m pretty low-key and flip-flops are perfect for summer and my lifestyle. While perusing, I’ve noticed that there are some interesting styles in sandals out now. As with almost all things, the trends right now (gladiator and anke wrap sandals) can be done well, or go hideously overboard. Example of a nice gladiator-style sandal:
Colorful, on trend, but not ridiculous. Speaking of ridiculous…
What is the appeal in looking like you fit a sandal over an ankle cast?
What are your favorite summer shoes? Do you go for the classics, or seek out new sandal trends?
Almost everybody in Hawaii wears slippahs (flip flop). It’s just a way of life … so maybe you were destined to live in Paradise!
Jane: Once you see the difference in comfort, you’ll know why.
Jean: some have thin straps, some have thicker…it depends on the style.
I was dead surprised when my Old Navy jandals lasted four years, and I only chucked them when I had two holes in the soles. Then I upgraded to Reefs, which are definitely on the high end, but which I can walk in for miles and miles. I expect them to last. And I mean, last.
My personal issue with havaianas is I don’t like the thin straps; I like thicker ones.
And I’m not a fan of the gladiator sandals.
I’m intrigued by the Havaianas, but they cost almost 10x as much as the Old Navy flipflops. Of course, 10 times $2.50 still isn’t a lot of money, but when the $2.50 ones work for me… why upgrade? :)
You need to get a pair of Havaianas – you’ll never buy Old Navy flip-flops again. There’s just no comparison. I wear Havaianas to Disneyland and my feet don’t hurt. They last for years.
I too am a flip-flop person; I wear them all summer long. I have to wear leather or fabric ones at work, so no Havaianas there, unfortunately. And while I like sandals, I work on my feet – it’s actually not easy to find comfortable sandals that aren’t also ugly.
I absolutely love flip flops. I used to wear other styles of sandals but began getting blisters all over. Somehow putting band aids on every part of my foot being touched with a sandal didn’t appeal. Out of desperation I tried flip flops and have never looked back. I have the dressy kind (flowers, beads, etc.) for more “dress up” occasions. My current comfortable flip flops are Reefs, but I also like Havianas and some Nikes.
First off, I can’t stand that thing between the toes. Yuck. I would wear the ones you can slip into with no backs, though. Unfortunately, because of a high instep, I got the fashionable plantar fasciitus, which was quite painful. The doctor said that I need the back strap to keep my foot muscles from pulling and contracting incorrectly while walking in a flip-flop kind of sandal.
Good luck to those who can wear them with no problems. However, we see them everywhere these days and some of the time they really look way too beach-like to be worn in some places. The sort of dressy ones look pretty neat and I wish I could wear them, but the foamy ones should probably be reserved for home use and surf and sand. Oh, well—you asked.
I only wear flip flops at home. Wouldn’t wear them outside (unless at the beach) because they just don’t have that much support.
And yeah, that sock/sandal is ugly!!!!
