Jean’s post about her discovery of Christopher Guest has had me fondly remembering my favorite bits from movie pasts.  Thanks to the wonders of YouTube, it’s easy.

This is Spinal Tap was when most of us were introduced to the incredible talents of Mr. Guest – AKA, 5th Baron Haden-Guest.  Coming up with my favorite scene was a challenge.  The glories of Stonehenge aside, it finally came down to two — Lick My Love Pump (which, sadly, I couldn’t find online) and the amp that goes to 11.  I settled on 11.

I’m sorry you couldn’t find Lick My Love Pump. It is a beautiful ballad. Christopher Guest is also famous for the SNL skits with Billy Crystal as the maintenance workers who were prone to stick nails up their noses. “I hate it when that happens.”

Sandy, as great as “This Is Spinal Tap” is, my favorite Christopher Guest moment is in “The Princess Bride”. For those who have only seen that priceless movie once or twice, Baron Haden-Guest plays the evil Tyrone, henchman of the even more evil Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon). The moment is when Tyrone invites the Prince to watch him torture Westley, the hero (Cary Elwes). When the Prince declines (lots of mischief to make), Tyrone commiserates, “Get some rest–if you haven’t got your health, you haven’t got a thing!” No matter how many times I’ve seen it, I still chuckle at that line!
