Dancing’s back! While I watch Dancing With the Stars each season, for me, the real dancing show is So You Think You Can Dance. I continue to be amazed at the wonderful dances created by the show’s choreographers.

For the past two weeks, I’ve been glued to my sofa each Tuesday and Wednesday evening. watching the initial auditions of SYTYCD. This past week was the Las Vegas call-backs, where the top 160 or so had to do various choreographed dances.

On Thursday night, the Top 20 were announced, meaning that the real show will start next week. This is when the top 10 male dancers will be paired with the top 10 female dancers, to do a variety of dances ranging from contemporary to ballroom to hip hop to you name it.

I’ll have to say that Thursday’s show seemed rather brief, giving only glimpses of some of the Top 20. As a result, while waiting for the show to start, I’ve been doing a lot of searching on You Tube to find auditions of the various dancers in the Top 20. I found an interesting viewer created compilation of pictures of all of the Top 20. While it contains no dancing, it has reminded me of the names and faces of some of my favorites.

One of my favorite auditions is in the video I’ve posted here featuring Broadway dancer Evan Kasprzak. He made it into the Top 20, while his brother was the last one cut. So, I’ll keep looking at more videos this weekend, and in between, the SYTYCD theme song will be playing over and over in my head.

How about you? Are you watching? Any early favorites? And what exactly prompted the fight in Las Vegas between Mia and Debbie?

Heather – that’s what I thought too!  Not last season but the season before that, I noticed it while channel surfing but didn’t really stop and watch it.  Then when I got totally and completely hooked last year, I could have kicked myself for not stopping the season before.  Now I’m totally hooked.  My 28 year old son came over last night and turned on the TV and the Vegas edition was being repeated.  He had the controller and left it on that channel.  Cool, I thought, he’s leaving it on because he knows his mama likes the show, but then from some of the comments he made, I realized he had watched the original.  Even cooler still I thought, ’cause he really thinks he’s the cat’s pajamas when it comes to all things cool and the fact that he’s watching SYTYCD meant I’d had at least some influence on him.
And SYTYCD Canada was wicked cool.  I saw the top ten live when they did their tour and the venue was sold out.

my adult daughters and i have become hopelessly addicted to this show – and yeah, THIS is the real “dance show” – almost 56 years young, and i probably called in more votes for josh than ANY 13 year old last season ……….thank you for starting this thread, linniegayl;   it’s good to see you and others at this site feel the
same way about the talent in this series!

as for early favorites, i’m beginning to get attached to the flamboyant kid from Haiti, and evan’s definitely a cutie pie……..
but i still go back on a daily basis and watch my past season fav’s on youtube…………..anybody remember danny from season 3?  oh my, that child could
fly…….

and, the fight was quite a surprise, wasn’t it?    after the outburst from mary though, i started thinking about it ………some of the choreographers and judges are really STRONG personalities – don’t ya’  know there’s alot of water being thrown on daily fires?    oh, how
i’d love to be a fly on the wall behind these very creative closed doors…………

This is my first year watching and so far I’m really enjoying it.  I didn’t know what I was missing last year.

been watching every season (though i missed half of season 1)! it’s one of the things i look forward to during the summer! I also like Evan Kasprzak! As for his brother Ryan, i hope his exposure at the SYTYCD auditions gains him some recognition for choreographing. I was pretty sad about the guy who would have made it to the top 20 if he hadn’t been under contract under a company. that was heartbreaking to watch. I was surprised caitlin made it. Her audition wowed me, but i didn’t think she was that great during vegas week.

Bonnie L – I too hope that someone out there recognizes Ryan’s talent as a choreographer. I wasn’t surprised in the slightest to see that of all the choreographed group dances, the one with Ryan in it was by far the best. I’m sure he was working his c-skills on that one. :)

I’m absolutely watching!!! I LOVE this show although in a way it’s kind of tough. I was so taken (in lust) with the winner of So You Think You Can Dance Canada that it’s hard to imagine getting as excited as I did over that one. Seriously!!! I voted for Nico for the two solid hours you were allowed to vote. I made coworkers vote. I felt like I was 13 years old again. But watching this season, makes me realize how very fortunate you guys are to have Kat Deely as the hostess.
And thanks for posting the YouTube video – I missed that particular episode where they tried out. It was so sad the other night when the older brother didn’t make it :(

I loved both those guys! Their brotherly love and support was all kinds of awesome and they had the dancing skills to match. ::Sigh:: Hopefully, Ryan’s exposure on SYTYCD will jump start his career as a dancer and, especially, as a choreographer.

I was disappointed that Diana Vaden (the black girl with the monkey luck charm who was the first cut on Thursday’s show) didn’t make it. Seeing her on the show was a huge excitement to me and my sister as we lived down the street from Diana and her family when my sister was a little kid and she was one of my sister’s childhood playmates. Apparently, Diana has mad skills and it was a bummer that they showed so little of her dancing.

I am way excited for the start of the competition!

I so wanted both Evan and his brother to make the Top 20, but if I have to take just one it would be Evan. He’s probably my early favorite. I wanted to see him make it last year, and was disappointed when he was cut. I also think Phillip is a brilliant popper, and will be watching him closely.

I loved those auditions. It seems rare to see an old Fred Astaire-esque dance, and he did it so well. On the other hand, I have to say I’ve NEVER seen anyone incorporate a whoopie cushion in a dance routine. Both of them are absolutely charming. I hated the way it ended–the two of them being last, knowing that one of them made it and the other didn’t.
