I absolutely hate slugs!

1) picking them off manually at night, by far the best method but nasty work
2) beer traps, hasn’t always worked for me though (then again, the Dutch don’t like Heineken either, that’s why they export it)
3) upside down (and empty) grapefruit halves, they crawl under it during the night, empty them during the day
4) don’t clean everything up – leave old and half decayed leaves lying underneath e.g. your hostas, they prefer those – doesn’t help with nice, tender young lettuce leaves though
5) use tubs and companion planting, plant lettuce leaves and alternate with members of the onion family – I’ve had some luck with this method
5) plant your vegetables in tubs, boxes or even raised beds with a 1cm broad copper strip around it, slugs and snails can’t pass this because it reacts with their slime or they get a shock – haven’t tried this one yet, but this method seems to have great results

He would bury small cans, like the size of tuna cans, to the surface and fill that with beer. It seemed to work and it”s a natural solution rather than spraying.
