Looking for Love on Every Deck
I just went on my first ever cruise and, whoa, it’s the perfect setting for a romance novel. (I was traveling with my daughter and not my husband so no shipboard love for me!) Everywhere I looked, there were places for strangers to meet–so many bars!–and activities for them to do.
On the last night, I watched what I realized is the perfect opening scene for a romance novel. I had pledged I’d do karaoke–for the first time–and while I was waiting for my turn to be up at the mike, a rather inebriated plush size* woman–late 20s, early 30s–started singing Sir Mix-a-Lot’s Baby Got Back (I Like Big Butts). She was giving it her all-shaking and shimmying and singing LOUD (and well.) She was AWESOME. As she sang, I saw, in a back corner of the the bar, a tall guy, staring at her in fascination.
And, boom, just like that, I wrote their shipboard romance in my head.
She’s recently been dumped by her fiance who ran off with his personal trainer and, as he left, said she’d gained some weight since they’d met and now, he just wasn’t feeling it. (Asshat.) She took the money she’d saved for the honeymoon–they were going dutch–and went on this cruise–open bar all the time. He’s here with his mom who was suddenly and very sadly widowed last year. This trip is one his parents planned to take for their 50 anniversary and he’s here with his mom helping her get over her grief. It’s been a rough year for him–dad’s death left him managing their family business and he’s been overwhelmed and unable to carve out any time for himself. On the first night of the cruise, after his mom went to bed–too much wine at dinner!–he wandered into the Stars bar looking for an IPA and was bummed to see it was Karaoke Night–he hates karaoke–and was getting ready to walk out when this woman, this over the top woman, started rapping. He was riveted. And so….
I’d love to read some actual love stories set on cruise ships. Anyone know of any?
*Sally Thorne uses this phrase in 99% Mine. I love it!
Nora Roberts PLAYING THE ODDS takes place on a cruise ship.i just checked and it is The MacGregors book 1.
The classic historical romance Beast by Judith Ivory has a couple that meets on a transatlantic crossing. It’s sometime in the Gilded Age, I think.
Love Judith Ivory! Loved the hero in that one, but the heroine took me some time to warm up to.
The newest Lily Morton Gideon (I think I reviewed it here?), also spends a bit of time at sea. The setup is a little different & while most people indulge in a cocktail (or 10) aboard ship, our hero tries to get clean and stay off drinks & drugs. I do love this author…but this wasn’t my favorite Lily pairing.
THAT’S JUDE AND ASA BTW.
I’ve just recalled that one of my favorite very favorite category romances, Maybe This Time, by Joan Kilby features a divorced couple that hooks up again when they run into each other on a cruise.
Linda Howard’s BURN takes place on a cruise ship – romantic suspense thriller. One of my favorite/must buy authors.
Re: cruise-related romances.
Almost, but not quite… Sherri Thomas’ Beguiling the Beauty is partially set in a transatlantic ocean liner. If not mistaken, Sylvia Day’s Seven Years to Sin is also set in a ship (though not exactly a cruise).
I think A.M. Madden’s Love on the Horizon might be closer to what you are looking for, but the main characters are not vacationing, they work for a cruise line.
Now, if you are into lesbian fiction the cruise romances are much more common. The two that I liked the most are: I Remember by Julie Cannon (in which the MC meet and have a steamy affair on a cruise and later discover that they are going to work together) and Sea Legs by KG MacGregor (the main character embarks on cruise to reconquer her ex, only to start falling in love for another woman that was not her type at all).
I don’t know of any cruise-related romances (I have severe vertigo and get sick even crossing the ferry, so no cruises for me), but at the beginning of Lilliana Anderson’s FOOL ME TWICE, the hero first becomes interested in the plus-sized heroine when she’s singing karaoke.
Just reread Beguiling the Beauty! Good one Kass. Although, their cruise experience wasn’t anything like the family ones I’ve been on! But I can totally see how a cruise could be the set up for a modern love affair…and I wonder if anyone else read this article and thought of it while reading your blog piece?!?!
The Time I Went On A Lesbian Cruise And It Blew Up My Entire Life

Didn’t know the article, Em, but the Olivia cruises are quite famous. Probably that’s why they are so many lesbian romances around that theme. :)
I, on the other hand, would love to read a good romance (m/f or f/f, doesn’t matter) on a ship expedition to Antarctica. In fact, I miss more romances in a research/expedition background. If you know any good ones, send them my way.
There’s not a cruise involved, but Adriana Anders’s upcoming romantic suspense, WHITEOUT, is set in Antarctica:

Thanks for the suggestion, DiscoDollyDeb. I liked the blurb so I’ll seek it out when it comes out. Is there any other book by Adriana Anders that you recommend?
I like Anders’s Love At Last series (LOVING THE SECRET BILLIONAIRE, LOVING THE WOUNDED WARRIOR, and one in The Reindeer Games anthology called, iirc, STRANDED WITH THE MOUNTAIN MAN). She also has a whole series about tattoo removal called Blank Canvas, but I’m not as fond of those—they get very dark.
Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll look them up.
Kass I went on a Nat Geo expedition with my husband to Antarctica. It was awesome but the only romance was between two of the expedition staff and was fun for all to observe. We termed it ‘love amid the penguins’.
:) Great term!
Going to Antarctica is on my bucket list. I really must do it!
Connie, this is such an awesome experience. Antarctica is on my dream list as well.
I ADORE that article. My nephew sent it to me when it came out and I devoured it.
Soooo… when is the book coming out? :)
It would be fun to try and write. I swear–I could see their whole story!
