Rock Me, Amadeus

mozart

I love rock music. By rock, I mean classic rock like The Cars and The Who, pop rock like Video Games by Lana del Rey, classic pop like Men at Work, fun rhythms like those of No Doubt, punk in the style of Green Day or the Ramones, indie groups like Arcade Fire – you are probably getting the picture here. But my recent stress level has had me longing for music I find a bit more soothing and soul satisfying.

Lately, I’ve found myself listening to the classics. My favorite composer is Vivaldi, most specifically his magnificent Four Seasons but I also adore Satie’s Gymnopédie No.1 (orchestra), Beethoven’s Für Elise (piano), the breathtakingly lovely Wedding Day at Troldhaugen by Greig and his wonderful In the Hall of the Mountain King from Peer Gynt. I don’t think there is a lovelier piece of music out there than Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky’s Waltz of the Flowers from The Nutcracker. I love Mozart’s symphonies, most especially Mozart Symphony #40 in G Minor, K 550 – 1. Molto Allegro.

That list is far from comprehensive, of course. All the men I listed were prolific and few of their works are anything less than stellar. Additionally, Chopin, DeBussey, Handel and countless others have all written music which I also adore. I’ve never studied music, so I won’t claim to know anything about the pieces that I love beyond the fact that I love them. For me the pleasure derives not from a knowledge of the work but simply the joy of listening to it.

Are there any classics that you love? What are they?

Hello, Neat post. There’s a problem with your website in internet explorer, might test this? IE still is the marketplace leader and a huge element of folks will pass over your wonderful writing due to this problem.

My husband listens to music all the time, mostly jazz, opera, or classical, with a bit of other stuff. I like all of the pieces you mention and would add “Carmina Burana”, some Puccini arias, the dies irae from Verdi’s Mass, and the Bach cello suites.

I love all kinds of music, but “classical” is my favorite. We are blessed here in SE VA to have a 24-hour-a-day classical musical radio station; you can access it on line at WHRO.org.

In addition to the composers and works you mentioned, I recommend Rossini [Barber of Seville], Rimsky-Korsakov [Capriccio espagnol], Borodin [everything], Mozart [Marriage of Figaro], Mauro Giuliani [guitar concertos], Charles Gounod [Faust ballet music], Offenbach [barcarole], Handel [Water Music, Royal Fireworks Music]. These are just a few of my favorites.

Happy listening,
Kay

I LOVE classical music. I listen to it in the evening while reading. Many times I’m not sure of the names of what I’m hearing because the dj on the radio talks so softly. !!!! But I do know that some of my favorites are Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring,” Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, and the movement Aquarium from The Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saens, which everyone has probably heard because it’s been in so many movies. And of course Pachelbel’s Canon.

Maggie, to honest I have never listened that much to classical music. I always associated it with music on hold or Victoria’s Secret or sad moments in movies. I do like your choice of song though.

I gotten out of the habit of listening to music. Part of it is that I don’t want to listen to oldies all the time, and the other is that I don’t like much that is out there. It seems it is either country or rap – which I can only take in small doses.

To relax I use to listen to Enya:

Or Gregorian Chanting Monks

I think I just need the sound of a voice. And thinks for the topic of music, I think I will start listening again to something smoothing.
