Pet Choices

Labrador-Retriever-PuppiesWe have a new addition to our family – a little black lab named Millie.  I say she’s little, but she’s already reached 34 pounds at 3 1/2 months of age.  She’s precious and smart and loves to play.

We waited a long time to add a new dog to the family.  Two years ago we lost our family pet, a chocolate lab named Chloe, and I couldn’t stand the idea of replacing her for a long time.  I’d had her since college when my husband, then boyfriend, gave her to me as a gift. We had to put the decision off a bit longer when we decided to move and needed to wait until we were settled before adding to the family.  In May, we were finally ready.

If you haven’t noticed, we’re breed loyal though we did consider shelter dogs and a Golden Retriever.  I’d never realized finding a lab to function as a family pet and not as a hunter would be so hard.  But after a whole lot of looking and phone calls, we found a reputable breeder in north Georgia.  Of the eight puppies in the litter, we picked Millie almost immediately since she seemed the most laid back of the bunch – adorable too.

After learning not to howl at the wind chimes every time the wind blows, she’s been great.  She chews and digs, but she’s a puppy and we expect that sort of behavior.  I have to admit that I’d forgotten just how expensive puppies can be.  We have our last set of puppy shots coming up soon and I’ll be so grateful since visits to the vet every three weeks add up.  Millie (and the kids too!) will have a newly fenced back yard to play in this week so she doesn’t have to spend quite so much time on a leash.  I’m really looking forward to seeing her run as much as she wants.  I also have to add that she really likes the family cat too, but I don’t think the feeling is mutual.

Is anyone else breed loyal or have new pet additions?

Heather: It is a cute dog. And maybe the photo dog is a long lost relation of your new dog. ;) No pets. I live in an apartment and could have a cat, but just wave to the cats I see in the windows in the neighborhood.

I’m embarrassed. I should have stated up front that the picture wasn’t of Millie. I couldn’t get any of my pictures to load because it kept saying that they were too big and I couldn’t figure out how to fix them. However, this stock photo is just like Millie. My boys thought that it was her.
@ Marcella – I grew up with terriers. So loyal and feisty.
@MarissaB – I love the blond labs, but couldn’t find any females around the time we wanted to get a dog. We haven’t taken Millie yet, but I love to turn on the water hose and watch her bark at it.
@xina – This is my husband’s 5th lab and my 3rd. I haven’t ever been around shelties but my step-dad had a Beagle mix and he was a great dog.

What a sweet little face! I love puppies, but they are a lot of work!

On our walk last night, I talked to my daughter about breed loyalty among dog owners. We passed several houses with 2 dogs in the yard (one had 3) of the same breed. We both agreed that a pet owner can get attached to a breed or just love the breed. Ours are shelties. Even though we have a Beagle and Sheltie now, I have had only shelties for most of my life. I am on # 7 right now. I love their personalities even though they fuss a lot with barking, they are sweet and loyal and love the family so much they herd them just to watch over everyone. What more could you ask for?
As for the little Beagle. We love him too. My son gave him to his girlfriend (now his wife and my DIL) for a birthday present. She lived in an apartment and couldn’t have him, so 7 years ago, we inherited him. Personally, I can’t imagine a Beagle in an apartment…he’s pretty much a handful in a house, but we still love him.

I don’t have a pet because hubby doesn’t want one, but my daughter has a blonde lab puppy name Oliver. He is just darling. I play a lot with him when I visit.

He’s a funny one. Both my daughter and her husband had to coax him into the water at first, but now he loves it. The latest episode had him jumping 10 feet down (a cliff, my daughter says) into a vigorously flowing river while still in his harness. His terrified ‘parents’ kept their panic at bay while they hauled him up, hand over hand, all 45 pounds of him. All the while, he looked up at them, mouth open in a grin, wagging his tail furiously. Now, how could they stay mad at him after that?

Good Oliver keeps them on their toes. =D

She looks so sweet! And naughty? the name Millie seems so suit her.
I have two small terriers and probably will stick to their breed, but in addition I might get a larger (yard) dog.
