Oscar blues

Are their acceptance speeches terribly embarrassing? Who wears what dress? – but there’s one ascept to it that makes me sad every year, and that is how few of the films awarded or even nominated I’ve actually seen.

This year, considering the movies that actually won an Oscar, I have seen Octavia Spencer in The Help, and my, was that a performance! I missed The Artist, because I was too tired from work the night my husband went to watch it. I watched and enjoyed Hugo Cabret, the same applies to Midnight in Paris. But I haven’t watched The Descendants or Beginners, and The Iron Lady is not even on here yet.

A second source of irritation are the movies I adored that didn’t make it into the nominations. The Adventures of Tintin? Adorable! Sean Penn in Cheyenne? What a power performance! Yet neither of them were considered.

What is your reaction to the Oscars? Did you like the movies and performances that were awarded?

Lynda X, how true about movies not being shown for long enough! In the small town where I live, both “Hugo Cabret” and “The Artist” were only on for a week or two, as was “The Help”. You really need to hurry if you want to watch them! If you are very busy that single week with work for example, bad luck to you. On a recent visit to Munich, my husband and I watched both “Drive” and “Hugo Cabret” because we’d missed them here. Sometimes the movies return after winning some Oscars, though, so I might get the chance to watch “The Artist” after all.

I think it was a very weak year for movies: Hollywood emphasizes special effects (aimed at 14 year old boys and the international market) over good writing and coherent plot and compelling characters. I loved, loved the book “The Help” and thought the movie was good, but believe “The Artist” will disappear in the future: great beginning, laggy middle and too predicable. I loved Streep in “Iron Lady, ” but waaay too much time on Thatcher’s dementia and not enough on the politics, IMO. I’m really glad that movies are available on DVD; they don’t last in theaters too long. I would suggest that the Oscars would be A LOT better if they opened a chute for the honoree the minute he/she began to thank individuals. Thought Billy Crystal did a fabulous job.

I was happy with most of the choices. But I always figure in the end, it’s the movies and performances you like that you remember, not that they won Oscars. For instance, how many times do you hear someone say “I LOVED that movie”? Many many times. You don’t hear “Oh, I loved that movie because it won 7 Oscars.” At least, that’s my take on it. ;)
