Once Upon a Time
Generally, there’s TV Sandy and Romance Sandy and rarely do the two meet. Most of the time, my taste in TV (which is kind of edgy) precludes my getting attached to the usual Lifetime or Hallmark Channel “romance” movies. True Blood? A series based on one of my favorite romance series? How often does that happen? But, based on the two episodes that have aired so far, there just might be a new series to brings my two sides together.
Created by two former Lost writers, Once Upon a Time is a series with parallel story lines, one that takes place in fairy tale world and another that takes place in the town of Storybrooke, Maine. In fairy tale land, the characters are cursed by the Evil Queen who condemns them to be banished to Storybrooke without their happy endings. In today’s world, they don’t know about their true identities and, in true Lost fashion, we follow the characters in fairy tale land and in the world today.
So far, we’ve met Snow White (a teacher today) and Prince Charming (a coma patient), the Evil Queen (the mayor), and Rumplestiltskin (the man who “owns the town”). Also present in the modern world is Emma Swan, a young woman who appears to be the child of Snow White and her Prince and who may be the only person who can “save” the characters in the modern world. It’s a bit complicated, I know, but then it’s two former Lost writers.
At any rate, I’m intrigued by the show and it’s fairy tale focus — which is sumptuously filmed — since I’ve always loved fairy tales. Ginnifer Godwin of Big Love is a great Snow White and the actor who plays the prince is vigorous and strong and not at all wimpy, a complaint I’ve had with previous romance heroes on TV. The Evil Queen is suitably e-e-e-e-v-i-l, even in her guise as a modern day mayor. In short, after two episodes, it’s all shaping up nicely.
The show airs on Sunday nights at 8 p.m., eastern time, and it wouldn’t surprise me if ABC doesn’t work in a repeat here or there since ratings have been high.

Thanks for all of the comments by everyone on both Once Upon a Time and Grimm. I usually don’t watch TV but tuned in because of these comments. I’m definitely hooked on Once Upon a Time. Great writing, casting, scenery and I love the fairy tale/romance aspects together with the suspense of what happens next. Grimm is an ok-watch for me. Not as compelling as Once Upon a Time. I appreciate how AAR is expanding my horizons in so many aspects of my leisure time.
Aww I am loving Once Upon a Time! I was not a fan of Lost either so I was not expecting to like this show. It totally had me hooked within the first 10 minutes! I am glad they are doing a twist on Fairy Tales. I love that idea! I was a big fan of The Tenth Kingdom and haven’t seen a show like it since.
I watched the pilot of “”Once Upon a Time”” and have the next episode to watch on the dvr. I liked it but was sad to see ANOTHER kid given up for adoption who has a wicked adoptive mother and who isn’t going to be happy until his “”real”” mother saves him from her. Sigh.
I really dislike Ginnifer Goodwin but I’m trying to ignore her and give Once Upon A Time a chance. So far it has been meh for me but the preview for this Sunday looks good.
I’m enjoying Grimm. I’m a Buffy fan so I’ll keep watching this one.
My favorite new show is Prime Suspect. That’s the one I’ll keep watching if the dang network will just have some faith that it will find an audience. It’s very well writeen and well acted.
My brother and his wife were visiting from out of state when Once Upon a Time came on. Since I’d been waiting to watch it, they politely joined me. (They’re television is stuck in the basement and isn’t used except to watch DVD’s.) My sister-in-law was so intrigued by the first 2 episodes, she told my brother the television was getting back in use next Sunday.
I watched the first Once Upon A Time and have the second recorded to watch tomorrow. I really enjoyed the first episode. I was particularly impressed with how gorgeous the sets were. it really seemed “”big budget”” to me.
I like the show so far and will continue to see if they can continue delivering good episodes.
I missed Grimm last week and was so disappointed. We ran out for dinner and ran into a line of people thinking the same. ugh. By the time we got home, it was over. I did catch the tail end of Once Upon A Time though, but not enough to understand what I was watching. I’m hoping to watch them both this week. I’m not much for reading paranormal lately, but I always love watching it.
Read in the paper today that “”Once Upon a Time”” has been renewed because it has done well, particularly with the 18-49 y.o. audience that sponsors love.
It’s my new favorite show! I am absolutely hooked. I was worried that all of tv was heading to realityville. LOL.
Yup, we’re watching both Once Upon and Grimm. I like both and hope the werewolf on Grimm is a permanent cast member. What surprised me the most is that my husband likes Once Upon but didn’t particularly care for Grimm. Since he’s a Castle fan but won’t watch True Blood, I expected the opposite. Just shows that even after 39 years of marriage I still don’t really know the man sometimes! LOL.
I’m watching both shows and I can’t really pick a favorite. On Once Upon A Time the person I am intrigued by is the sheriff. Good guy or bad guy? He seems fair minded in a lot of ways but then he is doing the mayors bidding, which puts him on the wrong side. I keep trying to figure out where he fits in Snow White but then he doesn’t have to- we have Jiminy Cricket and also
the witch from Sleeping Beauty.
It’s fun to have something like this on TV. Hope it stays for a long while.
I’ve watched both episodes with my whole family (DH and DSs 11 and 14) and we all like it. I love that, so far, it is a good show that is appropriate for all of us. A rare find on TV these days.
I’ve watched both episodes of Once Upon a Time and the women are really standout characters and actresses. I actually didn’t find the Prince all that interesting or princely; he fades in comparison to the strong women. Rumplestitskin is a good villian as well and I think that kid is great. But I think the dynamic between Emma Swan and the mayor/witch is what makes the show most interesting.
I also have the fear of falling down the rabbit hole. I couldn’t stick with Lost past two seasons and can’t begin to imagine how long they can keep this type of plot going before it starts getting annoying.
I’ve watched both shows but am leary of getting attached. Too often, these shows with complex mythologies fall down the rabbit hole and leave the viewer (ME!) with many questions and no answers. Real life is tricky enough; I want neat tidy endings in my fiction.
Janet, it was certainly a big bad wolf who was killing the children. There is another big bad wolf and he is the sidekick of the Grimm.
I’ve watched both episodes of Once Upon a Time (online) and found it to be very addictive. I just hope the residents of the town get clues about things sooner rather than later.
I like both of the shows. The first episdoe of Grimm was not about the big bad wolf collecting and killing children. The main detective character who is one of the last Grimms THOUGHT the Big Bad Wolf was abducting children but he just turned out to be a wolf trying to ignore his base instincts and NOT eat anyone any more. I think he will end up being the sidekick of Grimm. The show reminded me a lot of Buffy and Angel.
Once Upon A Time was better than I thought it would be, and I thought it was well-cast. It’s interesting to have two new shows in the same season that are fairytale-based. I recommend both shows.
There is so little good to watch on tv (God save me from “”Ghost Hunter”” “”Ghost Whisperer”” ghost ghost ghost marathons or ANY marathon for that matter) that an intriguing show like “”Once Upon a Time”” can’t help but stand out! Good luck to the series!
I did watch some of Grimm…can’t say I was real impressed…and haven’t watched anything of Once Upon a Time. From the trailers and hype it does look interesting but then again I only watch about 2 hrs of TV a week. I do increase that once Merlin is broadcast on Syfy channel in January…although I am not sure it will be on this season, I haven’t heard anything.
By evening the last thing I want is more chatter in my ears…so reading is where I am!
Yes, Jean, there is another fairy tale series. It’s called Grimm and its on NBC. It’s only aired once and, while it was good, it doesn’t have the romantic side to it that Once Upon a Time does. In it, a young police officer discovers that he’s one of the few remaining “”Grimms”” who can see fairy tale villains and kill them. The first episode was quite scary. A big bad wolf was collecting and killing children.
Forgot to mention: I feel like pop culture is starting, slowly, to move away from vampires and into angels and fairy tales, as a general theme.
I am loving the show as well. Hope it stay on
