NYC Weekend
Every once in a while, it’s good to just get away for a girls weekend and one of my favorite cities to get away to is New York. It’s an easy city to take in small doses, where you leave something left undone for the next time you visit. This time my sister and I did the usual things as well as some new things. However, if I’m completely honest, I have to admit that the whole time we were in the city I secretly wanted to catch a glimpse of Rob Pattinson filming Remember Me. I wasn’t that lucky, but we did see Harrison Ford and Rachel McAdams filming Morning Glory. I found out after the fact from US Weekly, that Pattinson hangs out in the East Village bar Black & White when in New York. If I’d known that before hand, I so would have been there. Oh, well.
Like usual, we visited Times Square and Central Park, but on this trip we visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which was a first for me. My favorite things there were the room recreations in the European Sculpture and Decorative Arts exhibit and the Arms and Armor. My favorite paintings were the Degas and Monet works in the European Paintings exhibit. The one exhibit I totally did not get was the Francis Bacon: A Centenary Retrospective, which was the most crowded exhibit. If anyone can explain the appeal, please do. Another new experience for me was dining at the modern Chinese restaurant Buddakan. To describe the experience in one word – awesome. I highly recommend it to anyone traveling to the city.
However, the highlight of my New York experience occurred in Atlanta. On Tuesday night, after arriving back in town, my family went to the Braves and Yankees game at Turner Field. Not only did the boys get to see Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez, my oldest son was picked to do the Cap Shuffle on the big screen at the end of the second inning. Needless to say, I was one proud mom.
Where do you go to get away and why?
That’s so true. Sometimes the locale is not as important as the reason why you’re heading there. In this case, it was time away with your sister. When my mother was still alive, my sister, mother and I would try to get away for just a couple of days once a year. The destinations could not be very far because of my mother’s health. Wonderful times–it was the company, of course. Now my two daughters and I try to get together once a year and make a vacation out of it. I wouldn’t trade any of the time I spend with them for anything else, since they both live distances away and we can’t often be together like that.
As for Chicago, I am sure you will love it, especially if you enjoyed New York. Of course, no city is like New York, but Chicago is trying! So much to do and so clean. It’s even better than Toronto to me and I have always loved Toronto (and still do).
Now that I don’t live there, Chicago is definitely my favorite get-away destination.
Tee, LOVE Traverse City, although I haven’t been there in years.
Heather, I had the most fantastic time in NYC a little over a year ago. Loved the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
I’ve never been to the Mid-West, but would love to. I think we’re going to try to hit Chicago in the fall. I don’t know which was better – New York or just a few days away with my sister. I grew up on the Gulf Coast and understand what you mean about the water. Love it!
Unfortunately, this Morning Glory is a comedy set in Manhattan and nothing to do with Spencer’s. But, wouldn’t that be nice if it did?
We’re very fortunate here in Michigan in that we have a fabulous “Up North” to escape to, even if just for a couple of days. I love it most anywere north of the city of Clare; but the Upper Peninsula, Mackinaw City/Mackinac Island and Traverse City areas are special favorites.
I also have a daughter who lives in Chicago and that is a fun, fun town to visit. I wish California were closer because I’m in love with it, especially San Francisco. Boston rates high on the scale with me also. Are we seeing a pattern here somewhat? I love being near the water, any kind, which totally relaxes me in minutes.
Is the Morning Glory you saw being filmed in New York a movie that is patterned after LaVyrle Spencer’s book? Just wondering.
