I’m a real sucker for reality dance shows on TV, and am totally delighted that So You Think You Can Dance started up again last week. And soon, Dancing With the Stars will be on again (although I’m much less excited about it this time around).

But Katie Mack’s post about The Chemistry of Dance got me thinking about dance movies. Because honestly, my love of dance started long, long ago. I have definitely enjoyed most of the movies Katie mentioned (and will check out others that I haven’t seen). But, for me, my all-time favorite dance movies are any movies featuring Fred Astaire.

I’ll admit I can’t remember the plots for most of his movies, because they absolutely don’t matter to me. It’s his charm, his grace, his dancing. I had such a hard time picking out a clip to post here. Should it be Say It With Firecrackers from Holiday Inn? Or how about Hard to Handle from Roberta? Finally, I came down to this clip from Swing Time (1936), because it features my favorite of his dance partners, Ginger Rogers.

Do you like Fred Astaire movies? If so, which are your favorite movies and dance sequences?[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

Hi! Is it OK if I ask something kinda off topic? I’m trying to view this page on my new iPad but it won’t show up properly, do you have any solutions? Should I try and find an update for my software or something? Thanks in advance!

Normally I like Frank Rich and the things he’s written, but for his comments about the people in the photo—–screw him.

Best dance sequence evah is in Stormy Weather where the Nicholas Brothers do jaw dropping moves. Fred Astaire said it was the best, and I am with him there:

Band Wagon has Cyd Charisse and is awesome. Gene Kelly – An American in Paris is one of my favourites. I also have a particular fondness for any movie that has Judy Garland dancing. A very sad woman, but a very special as well.

Love, Love, Love Fred Astaire movies. I don’t remember the name of the movie, but he did a ground breaking special effects dance, where he’s dancing on the walls and ceiling that is fabulous!! My favorite Astaire movies are the ones with Cyd Cherise. She was one of the most graceful women I have ever seen. Gene Kelly is also a fave of mine for dancing. Singing in the Rain and On the Town are wonderful movies

I’m actually surprised that I love dance movies so much, but haven’t seen any of Astaire’s. After the recommendations from the other day, I checked with the library and they have several of his films on DVD, so I’ll be taking care of that problem soon. :)

LinnieGayl I love all Fred Astaire’s movies, no finer dancer and I heard a gentleman to work with, that expected perfection. I loved Daddy Long Legs, Top Hat, You were never Lovelier, but my favorite is The Band Wagon. Everyone in Band Wagon made it a movie to remember, the songs, acting, comedy and of course the dancing.
