New Year's and Silly Movies?

Many of us are just now coming down off a sugar-high. The combination of lots of Christmas cookies, and saccharine sweet holiday movies can eventually get to be just a bit too much.

I didn’t overindulge too much on the holiday movies (saying nothing about the cookies here). I did catch one viewing of The Holiday, and one of Love Actually. And of course I watched nearly all of one viewing of It’s a Wonderful Life. But that’s it. Plenty for me.

So, I was hoping for some good movie marathons on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s day. I can remember in the past watching some fun Sherlock Holmes marathons. Instead, much to my chagrin, it appears that at least some of the channels are focusing on a New Year’s silly-thon.

On New Year’s Eve, Turner Classic Movies is doing a Marx Brothers festival. All day long, on January 1, AMC is showing the Three Stooges. What is there about New Year’s that screams out silly comedy?

I’m going to keep looking, but so far, neither of these seem like particularly appealing viewing options for me. What about a Fred Astaire marathon?[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

A Fred Astaire marathon! That would be fun. :-)

So would a “Thin Man” marathon — that’s fun, but witty.

I went out and rented Salt, The A-Team and a few that I don’t think Bob will watch. I’m like Sandy – I’m not much for the New Year and try and pretend it’s just another day. This year though Bob and I will get cozy on the couch and watch a few movies together.

For me, we didn’t do too much holiday movie watching – I ended up taping a bunch of food network shows I’ve never watched and even a few reno shows that I haven’t seen. Really fun and different to watch when nothing else is on and everyone else is asleep!

I’m planning to do a movie marathon for New Year’s Eve this year and a bunch of us still can’t decide what to watch. So far what we’ve come up with:

1. Back to the Future 1-3
2. 80’s teen movies
3. Romantic comedies that don’t suck
4. My favorite musical
5. Zombies

My suggestion was that we just put everything in a bag and then just blinding pick a few and that is what we watch.

My favorite marathon ever was one on Christmas Eve a few years ago of every ER Christmas episode. I had so much fun wrapping presents! You’d be surprised how quickly I was able to remember exactly where they were in the plots of various years. I am incredibly grouchy about New Year’s Eve which is the most depressing evening in the year to me. I stay miles away from the TV because I don’t want to focus on the reality — that it’s New Years Eve. I’d love a marathon of anything I love that DOESN’T remind me. I never get tired of Twilight Zone marathons on SyFy.

When my daughter Sarah was in college, she would bring home her Canadian friend Sarah who couldn’t afford to go home for the holidays. The Sarahs would camp out in front of our only TV and watch the Star Wars movies over and over again.

But I’m with you about finding a movie marathon theme. How about Coen Brothers–culminating with a trip to see True Grit? Or how about a Bill Murray marathon? Or Tom Selleck as Jesse Stone? Of course, there’s always the modern fall back of Harry P.

Too bad Daniel Radcliff, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson haven’t made more films or there could be marathons of their films. But there are enough films from Robbie Coltrane, Maggie Smith, John Cleese, Alan Rickman, and some of the others that a great marathon could be put together of their work.

The possibilities are endless! Bring on the popcorn!
