New Year, New Books?

happynewyear Happy New Year! Now that 2012 has started, everything just feels so fresh and new. I have a new page-a-day calendar, I’m getting used to writing a new date, and somehow after the fun of New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, the world just seems shiny and new for my first day back online. So, of course 2012 means starting with all-new books, right?

Not so fast. There are certainly more than a few books I’m looking forward to reading this year. I recently read a book by Nadia Lee that I enjoyed, and I’m hoping the next installment in the series will be out in 2012. Laura Lee Guhrke and Kaki Warner have new books out in January that I want, and Delilah Marvelle is starting a series in 19th century New York that sounds more than a little bit intriguing. Janice Kay Johnson has at least one new series title coming out this year that I know of, I’m finding word of three new books in the works for Carla Kelly, and I really want to read the book Judith James has planned for this year. Many other autobuys of mine in subgenres from romantic suspense to paranormal to historical also have books coming out this year, and I’m sure many other debuts and new-to-me authors will catch my eye.

However, that’s not the full picture. I hope the new stuff will be wonderful; I’m always up for wonderful reading. With books I love, savoring them is important to me as well. Literary snobs who consider romance disposable may not get it, but I really love reading some of my favorite books over and over again. The croquet scene in Julia Quinn’s The Viscount Who Loved Me is hilarious enough to stand up to extra readings. And the many layers of the relationship between Lizzy and William in Libertine’s Kiss? Oh, that needs way more than just one reading. The poetry that Judith James includes in this book begs to be appreciated for more than just a quick skim through, as well.

Complex paranormal and fantasy worlds find themselves enhanced on several readings as well. Or, I should say that the good ones do. When I read books by authors such as Nalini Singh, C.L. Wilson, Keri Arthur or Vicki Pettersson, I enjoy myself greatly and I also know that I will see even more in their worlds when I make the time to visit them again. In this way, I anticipate 2012 being a year of finding great new reads and hopefully great new authors, but I also hope to make it a year where I have time to discover new things that I never dreamed would lurk inside old favorites of mine.

What about you? What are you planning to read or revisit this year?

– Lynn Spencer

Most of what you assert happens to be supprisingly accurate and it makes me ponder the reason why I hadn’t looked at this in this light previously. Your article truly did turn the light on for me personally as far as this particular subject goes. But there is actually one particular factor I am not too cozy with so whilst I try to reconcile that with the core theme of the point, permit me see just what the rest of the visitors have to say.Very well done.

It’s so easy to get overwhelmed by all the great books out there – those already published yet unread and those in the pipeline. My goal this year is to stay focused: I want to read a couple of series I have not had a chance to try yet such as Moning’s Fever Series as well as Singh’s Archangel Series, but still have time for new releases….oh and those top 100s I never got to and all the Georgette Heyer’s I haven’t read…But what about my comfort rereads!!! Oh yes – and Joanna Bourne, and more mysteries….when will I reread Outlander? WAAAA – I’m overwhelmed already -smile!

I’m looking forward to reading some debut authors and seeing if they live up to the hype.

At the top of the list? Celia Grant’s A LADY AWAKENED and Manda Collins’ HOW TO DANCE WITH A DUKE.

My daughter and 5-year-old grand-twins, who live in Rome, spent December with us (her husband joining us on the 16th). During that time, I added samples and buys to my Kindle, but didn’t have time to read anything. Now I have review books and Kindle books backed up!

I usually reread during January (usually the books I put on my DIK list during the last year), but not this month. My cup runneth over with reading! I’m with you, Lynn, on the books I’m looking forward to reading, but…but…but I need time to catch up before the flood of books I’m awaiting.

I just reread The Warlord Wants Forever by Kresley Cole. Sigh. The most perfect novella. Now I’m thinking of rereading the whole Immortals After Dark series in preparation for Lothaire coming out soon.

My DIL just finished The Hunger Games, and at dinner on Fri. she couldn’t stop talking about them, so I’ll be reading those books very soon this year. I suppose I will continue to reread old favorites. I hadn’t been much of a rereader until last year, and now I have a Kindle packed with older titles. I also plan on reading outside the genre more, maybe reading more historical fiction. Right now, I am reading The Little Bride by Anna Solomon. I’d like to get to the new Stephen King book at some point too, and I must get through the Stieg Larsson series. In the romance genre, I will continue to reread.

Mary Balogh has a new release in May – YAY! Sherry Thomas’ first installment in her new trilogy is scheduled for May, and the second installment for July – double YAY! And until then, if I stick to the books from AAR’s list of top 100 romances that I haven’t already read, I can’t go wrong there. 2012 is looking good :)

I am waiting for Ann Gracie’s new book in the Devil Rider’s series, The Accidental Wedding. It’s out tomorrow!
I reread Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series every year and the Viscount Who Love Me is one of my favorites and I love Colin and Phoebe’s story.

I have quite a stash of books and books I want to re-visit…but as of yet I haven’t given it much thought…I always re-read Outlander and the two authors you mention are also my favorites and I may re-visit them this year too! There are so many books and so little time!
