Music for special moments

celineSad but true: I listen to music less often than I did when I was younger. This may partly be the result of having to put up with a certain amount of noise at work – I really appreciate the quiet nowadays. It may also have to do with the fact that my husband a) listens to the news a lot on the radio, and b) despises almost all of the music I like. So I hardly ever put in a CD during the hours we spend together. But sometimes I get gripped by the urgent need to place a CD in the player, turn up the volume and sing along with a favorite song or two. Today I just had to listen to Falling Into You by Celine Dion. (Fortunately, my husband isn’t at home right now. He detests Celine Dion. Why is it that heavy metal is perfectly acceptable socially, whereas Celine Dion isn’t? Sigh!)

I adore Falling Into You. I love almost every song. My two greatest favorites, the songs I like to listen to five times in a row, are It’s All Coming Back to Me Now and I Don’t Know.

I also really like the video.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvWWuaasLagI Don’t Know is a favorite because it’s about a strong woman who is not afraid of loving, although this makes her vulnerable. She is the kind of heroine I prefer to read about to almost any other, and actually mirrors my favorite type of hero as well.

When I listen to these two songs, I feel strong and emotional – not mutually exclusive, these two – and almost solemn. One of those YEAH moments.

What are the songs you like to listen to when you want to feel most like yourself?

I like Celine. I don’t really listen to her, but I think she has an amazing voice. Meatloaf did the original version of that song, and it’s very good too.
As for music that I fall back on, I listen to a lot of music. I really enjoy Jonny Lang’s, Lie To Me. That entire CD is really great. Bluesy rock. And I love his gravelly voice.

Celine Dion isn’t my favorite singer, but I really like some of her songs, and “It’s All Coming Back to Me” is a favorite. I think of it in terms of all those relationships that ended acrimoniously, even when the two people loved each other, and then later they meet again and can’t quite remember why they broke up. For example, it could easily be the theme song for couples who met too young and weren’t mature enough to weather the storms together. Or all those marriage-in-trouble or reunited couples stories — what seemed insurmountable problems years ago can now be solved by two older and wiser lovers.

Gregorian chant. I learned it in the 3rd grade and I still love it.

Hmmm. I don’t know what kind of music I listen to when I want to “feel like myself” – I’ve never thought of it that way.

When I need a smile on my face, the tune that never fails to do it is “In The Mood” by Glenn Miller. I’m a big fan of big band/swing music and this tune is the best of it in my opinion. It always makes me smile.

If I’m in a maudlin mood and want to stay that way, some old Irish ballads will do the trick, there’s so many sad Irish songs.

I guess if I had to say what I listen to to be myself, it would be Rich Mullins, a contemporary Christian singer/songwriter. His songs just speak to my soul, the poetry of his lyrics is very moving.

It really depends on my mood. In the past few weeks it has been this one for me, simply because it is so cheerful. The singer is a (Dutch) newcomer, but I love her voice and live she’s even better.
