Lisa Valdez – A Publication Date for Patience?

Readers at our forums recently noted that the Barnes & Noble website indicates that Patience, the long-awaited second novel from Lisa Valdez, would be out starting today. Given that the author’s website does not appear to have been updated since May 2008 (curious in light of a supposed January 2009 release), I inquired further.

Today I received confirmation from Ms. Valdez’s publisher that she does not have a release coming out today. Further, I have been informed that Lisa Valdez’s book “currently is not scheduled for publication.” Given that Ms. Valdez’s website lists her contact information as “being updated”, things are not looking good here. Hopefully, the situation will change, but unless I hear something further from Ms. Valdez, I don’t think I’ll be feeling too optimistic.

ETA: As noted by reader Trish in the comments below, Ms. Valdez has updated her website since this post initially went up. There appears to be a little more news, but still no definite release dates. Hopefully, things will work out for the author.

Thanks for the guidelines shared using your blog. Another thing I would like to convey is that fat loss is not all about going on a dietary fad and trying to shed as much weight as you can in a couple of weeks. Patience will be released April 6, 2010, according to a message that went out from Lisa Valdez herself this weekend. Hooray!

I had had some e-mail communications with Lisa shortly after the first book, and it appeared that she had suffered a great deal of verbal abuse from the world about that book. As a result she was backing up and licking her wounds. (Also she was no longer going to be able to accept any communicatons without them being prior screened by a third party. (A shame to have to do that)).

For whatever good it might have been, I offered my positive comments, and enclouragement as I really enjoyed the first book, and also look forward to seeing more from her.

‘Tis a shame the world has to be that way. God, if you don’t like it, well don’t buy it or read it. To me it is just THAT SIMPLE. Why dopeople have to raise so much hell just because your thought / ideas are not the same as mine, .

Also hoping for a release soon of the next book(s).

Does anyone know what and the world could be the problem with her getting this book published? Is it at all possible that she is ill. It just does not make sense to me. You would think that since she had such GREAT success with Passion, she would be so excited about getting another book published. She is being very unfair to devoted readers for not giving us an explanation of what the problems could possible be regarding this second book.

I very seriously doubt that her book “”Patience”” will ever be published.
I have a hard time understanding, since “”Passion”” was such a wonderful read, why there seems to be such problems with her and the publisher.

Hi all – I found this website by chance, I had no idea that Patience hadn’t even been published! I have been looking for this book for so long it’s embarassing – everywhere I look says ‘out of stock’! not awaiting publication (or whatever the correct term is). Does anyone know where all the extracts have come from then? Thanks!

Like all the commentors here, I loved Passion. It was sexy, fiesty, and romantic at the same time, and Lisa Valdez did not shy away or hide away from the raunchier scenes. This is unusual for a romance read, as it tends to skim over or dilutes them.

Since reading the preview chapters on her website, and at the end of Passion. I was dying to read Patience. It is now sadly, June, and no word. Her website has not been updated, and it seems Patience has not been sceduled by the publishers. I think I’ll put Passion and Patience to the back of my mind now, otherwise I’ll be impatiently waiting, and continue to be disappointed. Best Wishes to the author – Lisa Valdez.

I loved Passion. I suspect that Ms Valdez put her all into it – is burned out as a result. Anyway what can she write in another book that would be at least as interesting if not more so than Passion? With this comment I retire from the Lisa Valdez fan club for moe fruitful pastures and wish Ms Valdez all the very best. Passion remains high on the list of exciting novels I have read.

Thanks Kathryn for your reply, appreciate it. Hope you are feeling better soon.

I really hope Lisa is able to deliver this year and the book was worth the wait. I really feel for the fans, its tough enough to wait 6 months or even a year but after 4 years…that is loyalty.

Carol, extensions depend on a lot of things, but I think the most important is the author’s relationship with her/his editor. If the author gives plenty of warning and the editors are able to reschedule then it’s not so much a big deal. Being as considerate as possible of the publishing house is a good thing. As well, an author who is rarely late is probably given a bit more leeway than someone who is habitually unable to meet deadline. It also depends on the circumstances of being late — a death in the family is obviously not the same as sitting around watching TV. However, the publisher is within their rights if the author doesn’t deliver on time to ask for money back. I believe that most publishers are quite tolerant and will do their best to work with the author.

I know authors who have been a few weeks to months late. I’ve never heard of anyone being fired for it, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t authors out there who simply haven’t been offered another contract. I suppose it depends on how much the editor/publisher believes in the author’s work.

Sorry if any of this doesn’t make sense — I’m not feeling well and I’m a little loopy. :-)

Thanks for the update. I know a lot of fans are still hoping Patience comes out, so hopefully it will be this year.

Karen and Kathryn maybe you could help answer this, if an author has a deadline and the author needs an extension, how many are given? Or if the author cannot fulfill the contract…I would think the publisher would want their money back by now or end their relationship with this writer who cannot deliver.

I think PASSION was a one horse race and sadly, Ms Valdez may have too many emotional issues to make writing her career.
I wish her the best…..

I don’t want to play Devil’s Advocate, and I don’t know Ms. Valdez, but…

Even if she turned the whole book in on Dec 15, there’s no way it will be out April 1. It has to go through the editing stage, revision, copy editing, and proofs before it ever makes it to the shelves. And then it has to be formatted and printed, bound and shipped. If I were one of her readers, I wouldn’t even hope to see anything from her until late 2009. That’s my educated guess.

Not that I have a horse in this race, but being in serious procrastination mode I went over to Valdez’s website to see what she posted…which is that she turned in everything but the last three chaps of the book on Dec. 15. Not REVISIONS, the original manuscript.

Which says to me it’s just taken a long time for this one to get from brain to page (it happens). Until she’s actually finished those last chapters, she won’t even have revisions. Once that’s in and she and her editor has some idea of how much work (if any) needs to be done, then she’ll get a release date.

Yep, I’m kind of pissed off about the whole thing. At this point, I won’t even buy it when/if it comes out.

Too much drama. It’s really annoying.

I’m at the who cares at this point. While I read and enjoyed Passion, I don’t understand all the hoopla on her next release. If it comes out, it comes out. In the meantime I have so moved on and found a number of wonderful new authors and I can’t be bothered caring. I honestly don’t understand all the chatter and speculation on a one book author.

I figured all these rumors were just that – rumors. And the April first date, a joke of some kind? Anyway, I just went to the author’s website and she’s confirmed that the book is not coming out anytime in the near future (see link below). For the life of me I can’t imagine that there were so many rewrites necessary. There HAS to be something else going on here!

I looked over at Borders and Books A Millionand they are now showing a release date of April 1, 2009. What I really don’t understand is just how much of a rewrite did she have to do to Patience?
