What is it about Christmas and limited editions. I am not even talking about all the limited editions at the cosmetic or perfume counter. I have learned to just stay away from there completely during the holidays. What I am talking about are the ambushes just waiting in almost every isle of the grocery store. Retailers pull out all the stops over the holidays making it impossible to resist. Oh, isn’t that cute or Mmmm, that looks good. From specialty cookies and candies to coffee creamers – even baby diapers, just seeing the words Limited Edition makes us want to pull out our pocketbooks and buy. Because of course we only have a limited time to stock up. Get it now or you have to wait a whole year for it to be released again.
Recently I ended up with three different bottles of coffee creamer. I bought two on one shopping trip and then another one later because I wanted to try International Delight- White chocolate Raspberry, Peppermint Mocha, and Salted Caramel Mocha. And I haven’t bought the S’mores favor yet.
I never buy Oreo cookies but Candy Cane Peppermint Oreo or White Fudge Covered has me salivating. Then there is Chocolate Covered Ritz crackers and M&M’s Cherry Cordial Limited Edition. So far I resisted on these, but then I try to avoid the candy and cookie isles around this time.
However, I can’t resist the egg nog. And it wouldn’t be Christmas without peppermint. And by the same token who can resist Dreyer’s Limited Edition Egg Nog or Peppermint Ice Cream. I can’t just buy one favor, I have to buy both this time of year.
Way back when General Foods International Coffee had a Chocolate Mint favor available all year round. It was discontinued and came back years later as Maxwell House International Coffee Peppermint Mocha Latte but only during the Holidays. For a couple of years I ordered it online, but then couldn’t find it. I did without until about two years ago when to my joy I found it at Target. I would buy ten containers at a time or all they had on the shelf but I haven’t seen it this year. It is available at Amazon, but it is over $5.00 a can. So even though I love it I am not paying that for it. Still I really miss it.
How do you fare in the grocery store this time of year? What items do you find impossible to resist?

One of my real weaknesses this time of year is Edy’s pumpkin ice cream. My regular grocery didn’t have any before Thanksgiving so I was frustrated this year.
I’m also a sucker for Trader Joe’s peppermint hot chocolate mix only available this time of year. They sell out so fast that if I don’t pick up a few the first time I see it I’m out of luck.
I bought that one too although I have since run out.
Leigh, I have a roll of “limited edition” Press-N-seal that I will be using for many, many Christmases to come. It cracks me up, in the middle of the summer, when I go to use my Christmas themed wrap.
I am a limited edition food product nut. I buy the sugar free pumpkin pie flavored creamer along with the peppermit flavored. I buy the candy cane oreos. There are others too numerous to name. So, yes, the sales gimmick works on me.m:-)
I must be different because I have never bought any limited edition food product at all.
