Latte Envy
Over the last few weeks I’ve heard a lot of my friends rejoicing about the return of various holiday-flavored drinks to their favorite coffee houses. As if that isn’t enough, I see tweets and Facebook status updates about various faraway friends who are sipping pumpkin spice lattes and peppermint lattes.
Normally, I’m just fine drinking my Earl Grey with a bit of milk, or the occasional hot chocolate or chai tea, but lately, I’ll admit to a bit of latte envy. After all, it’s the holiday season! Where are all the exciting hot drinks for us non-coffee drinkers?
A few weeks ago, after mentioning this to a friend, she suggested I try a London Fog, a drink she said her coffeehouse regularly prepared. Well of course, my local coffeehouse didn’t have one. The London Fog is made by placing one tea bag in a bit of boiling water, until it gets really strong. Then, you mix the tea in with a cup of hot milk, to which you add a shot of vanilla syrup. Since I couldn’t get it out, I tried making it at home, and it’s really quite tasty.
My favorite local coffeehouse does make what they call an Earl Grey Latte. Their version involves just 1/2 milk and 1/2 hot water, and they add a shot of almond syrup to the mix. It’s also pretty good, and easy to make at home.
But I’m still very curious about those pumpkin lattes and peppermint lattes. In fact, so curious that I started searching for non-coffee recipes on the web. I did find several recipes for non-coffee pumpkin lattes, but nothing for peppermint lattes.
The recipe I found for a non-coffee pumpkin latte at All Recipes.com includes the following ingredients:
Ingredients
- * 1 cup pumpkin puree
* 1 quart milk
* 1/4 cup white sugar
* 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
* 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
You heat all of the ingredients in a pan, stirring regularly with a whisk. Now I love pumpkin, but am not sure if this really sounds good. In fact, I’m thinking it might be easier to just buy a small bottle of pumpkin spice syrup and give that a try. But I’ve come up empty on the peppermint latte front.
Do you have any favorite non-coffee hot drinks? If so, what’s your favorite?

Along with everything which appears to be developing throughout this particular subject matter, your perspectives are fairly exciting. Nevertheless, I appologize, because I can not give credence to your entire plan, all be it exhilarating none the less. It seems to everyone that your commentary are generally not completely rationalized and in reality you are yourself not really wholly convinced of your point. In any event I did appreciate looking at it.
Hi, i read your blog occasionally and i own a similar one and i was just curious if you get a lot of spam remarks? If so how do you reduce it, any plugin or anything you can suggest? I get so much lately it’s driving me insane so any support is very much appreciated.
Heya just wanted to give you a brief heads up and let you know a few of the pictures aren’t loading correctly. I’m not sure why but I think its a linking issue. I’ve tried it in two different browsers and both show the same outcome.
Missie, hot lemonade does sound good.
Manda, I’m going to have to look for their Chegnog & pumpkin chai..they both sound interesting.
Gail, adding peppermint to hot chocolate sounds like it would come close.
Thanks for the suggestions, ladies!
I love making mulled cider in a crock-pot around the holidays. The other favorite hot drink in my house (though not holiday specific) is a ginger drink that is sold by one of the Asian markets in town, it’s sweet and spicy. Similar tasting to the ginger tea in Thai restaurants.
I don’t how much luck you’ll have with the non-coffee peppermint latte but I bet you could find a good recipe for peppermint hot chocolate, I haven’t tried them but I know they’re out there.
Starbucks does a couple of good non-coffee holiday drinks. If you like eggnog, you have to try their Chegnog, which is an eggnog chai tea latte combination. They also have a pumpkin chai which is good (but I prefer the one with eggnog). The spices in the chai blend really well with both the pumpkin and the eggnog.
I’m not a coffee drinker either, so I feel your pain. ;-) Also, I like my tea black — I am NOT a cream/milk in my tea person AT ALL — and I’m also one of those folks who doesn’t care for Earl Grey, either.
Sometimes I’ll drink a cup of warm sugar-free apple cider. Sugar-free hot chocolate is also a tasty treat — sometimes with a shot of rum ;-) And homemade hot lemonade — with fresh lemon — is a favorite, especially if my throat is scratchy or sore.
