Landscape Photography

coeur_de_voh_new_caledonia_5I’m not much of a photographer, probably because I don’t have the patience.  This extends to my computer desktop wallpaper, which is changed two or three times a week.  I sometimes use pictures from my own travels and community, but more often draw them from a collection of landscape and nature photos I regularly visit.

The first is, of course, National Geographic.  A friend destroyed all my illusions when she said they air-brush their photos, but I hope that’s a generalization.  In any case, their photographs are works of art, and I’m particularly partial to David Doubilet’s underwater photos:

And then there’s Nikon Small World, an annual microscopic photography contest hosted by Nikon.  The photos are beautiful as well as fascinating, and it’s pretty amazing how things look up close, like the cross-section of an anglerfish ovary below:

Earth from the Air (or Earth from Above, as it’s also known) is a touring photo exhibition that I first encountered in London, five years ago.  The photographer, Yann Arthus-Bertrand, spent years taking pictures of the earth from the sky, and put them together in an exhibition that not only dazzles the eye but also raises environmental issues associated with each photo.  For instance, the Coeur de Voh in New Caledonia (pictured at the top) is actually a mangrove swamp currently endangered by overexploitation of the nearby resources.  Each photo has an associated problem, and if the exhibit comes to your town I encourage you to see it.

Do you like photography?  What do you have as a desktop wallpaper?

LinnieGayl – Yeah, I’m pretty clueless too beyond the simple point and click. I try to frame every photo (rule of thirds, or something), but it often goes to pot.

LeeB – Nice. Very romantic.

I love photography and take as many photos as possible when I travel. My desktop photo is actually an illustration by Howard Pyle. You can see it here: http://a2.vox.com/6a011016c2bb66860d0123dda87ea2860b-500pi

Jean, I love photography, but have absolutely no skills myself. The last time I was in London, I thought I was taking fantastic photos. However, when I got home, I discovered that on the second day I’d accidentally switched the button on my camera from photo to video. So instead of wonderful photos of Bath, Hatchards, the Tower of London, and every place else we went, I had a lot of quick videos of my feet….sigh.

Gail – I was gonig to say no, I’d never seen E. Burtynsky’s works. But then I saw his photos on the Three Gorges, and I’m pretty sure I saw an exhibit featuring his photos (before and after) on the Three Gorges. Amazing industrial/environmental photographer.

xina – I’ve got a Fuji S-series from several years ago, and although it’s the slowest digital camera I’ve come across (action shots are out of the question), I love the rendering capabilities.

I love photography. I would dearly love a Nikon d5000. The SLR cameras take beautiful pictures. Ah well…I’ll put that on my wish list.

I love photography, my art elective of choice at the moment is Advanced Creative Photography (B&W darkroom class).
My current wallpaper is a photo I took of a photo from a calender of Saxton Freymann’s Food for Thought pictures.
If you like interesting photos with environmental context I’ll ask if you’ve seen Edward Burtynsky’s photos http://www.edwardburtynsky.com/. I find his stuff fascinating.
