If You Like…Julia Quinn

We are now in process of  periodically updating the If You Like lists at AAR.  Pollsters Lee Brewer and Cindy Smith have given suggestions for updates to the lists as they appear now.  We also would like to hear what our readers have to say.  This week’s author is Julia Quinn.   Here are the authors we have as our recommendations for ones that you may enjoy if you like Julia Quinn:

Victoria Alexander

Jill Barnett

Suzanne Enoch

Sabrina Jeffries

Julia London

Cathy Maxwell

Amanda Quick

Recommending new authors is a tricky process.  You might like an author because of the genre they write in, or the time period they set their books in, or because of their unique prose.  One reader may love Quinn and hate, say, Jill Barnett, while another reader would agree that these two are a good match for like stories.  We would like to open this for discussion from our well read readers.

  • Do you think the above authors are good matches for Julia Quinn?
  • What about Julia Quinn’s writing do you find unique or specifically enjoyable?  For Quinn’s fans – what makes you search out her books?
  • Is anyone missing from the above list?

After our readers have weighed in, we will update our existing page an link it to this discussion so that others may profit from the experience of AAR’s readership.  We hope to update or add to our pages in this way so that they are more useful and dynamic.

Please comment – we await your romance reading wisdom!  Thank you.

I love Julia Quinns work! Her relationships show overcoming of trauma and the importance of communication in any kind of relationship. She balances humor and drama so well and doesn’t get overdramatic like some authors can be. Her characters aren’t perfect and have flaws which is so refreshing. The only other author I’ve read that had similar themes with healthy relationships is Tessa Dare.

I LOVE JQ and have read most of the authors you all have listed, I’dd like to add Johanna Lindsey to the list as well as Lisa Kleypas. Both great writers, Althogh Linsey is the funniest of the two ive posted.

I’d agree with the Lauren Willig recommendation — well for the European Historical part of the books. Some older Amanda Quicks also seem to be a good match, but not her newer works.

The only other name on that list I’ve read is Julia London, and I just couldn’t bring myself to care about her characters enough to get through the whole book. JQ has something that few other writers do. Eloisa James, definitely, and Sherry Thomas.

I love Julia Quinn, but the only one of the authors listed in the post that does it for me is Amanda Quick. I’ve tried all the rest and intensely disliked their books (well, early Sabrina Jeffries books were good, but I can’t stand her latest ones), and don’t feel they have much to do with JQ’s other than the fact that they are historicals and some of them are light-hearted.

I’d agree with the recs of Tessa Dare, Lauren Willig and Julie Anne Long, and I’d add Kate Noble. Even though I didn’t love the one I read by her, it did remind me of JQ.

Yes yes Keira! And there are some early Mary Baloghs: An Unlikely Duchess, that have some of the sparkling wit … I always thought More Than a Mistress was quite witty too.

I’d also recommend Georgette Heyer, the precursor to Julia Quinn, whose “”wit in dialogue”” JQ emulates very well.

I agree with everyone’s recommendations re “”If you like…”” Regency or historical authors. Julia’s sparkling writing and wit remind me of some contemporary sparklers such as Jennifer Cruisie and Rachel Gibson.

I love Julia Quinn as well and was able to meet her at the RWA signing last July. As stated above, her books often have a lot of humor – “”The Viscount Who Loves Me”” and last year’s “”What Happened in London”” stand out.

I think that many authors could be mentioned as similar but each is unique perhaps in their way of writing.

I think there are a lot of similarities between JQ and Lauren Willig–they’re both very funny and have a way with words and phrasing that just makes me laugh.

I would definitely add Eloisa James, Julie Anne Long, and Tessa Dare. All three incorporate wit and a sense of the absurd in a manner that’s very similar to Quinn.

For me, Julie Anne Long is similar to Quinn. And I haven’t read her, but I’ve heard newbie Sara Lindsey likened to her. Anyone who’s read her have any thoughts?

Eloisa James. Like Julia, her writing can be serious but her wit can charm.

Julia Quin is one of my favorites. She always makes me laugh – my favorite in a book. She’s generally a quick read – not because of a lack of depth but because she just can’t be put down.

I agree with most of the authors you have listed – the ones I don’t are only because I’ve not read them. I’d maybe add Amanda Scott to the list though. Her books are a bit more but I always group them with JQ & Victoria Alexander.
