Holiday Highlight: A Haircut
Now, I know you can interpret the title two ways: One, I really need to get out more; or Two, I’m incredibly shallow. But the truth is plain and simple – a good haircut makes me feel like a million dollars. I was, literally, bouncing out of the hairdresser’s. I was doing the hair swish thing (see Prince Charming). I was looking in store windows to check it out. I was having my moment of supreme vanity.
Of course, it doesn’t last. No matter how much I contort myself I’ll never get it as good as my hairdresser does (Dee – Your hands are magic). But a good cut does wonders (I have a sort of shoulder-length shaggy layered thing going on), and I’m left feeling confident for another 10 weeks (or so).
How often do you go to the hairdresser? Are you a keep it simple person, or the whole works kind? Do you have any life-changing styles? (Mine is the side part.)

Awesome weblog. I just love your text!!
I came across this blog sifting by means of Newsnow because I was attracted by a witty headline. Now I read you first just before I go to Newsnow. I enjoy your weblog. Period. It’s quite simply head and shoulders above the rest.
Like Shrek, great movies!
Yet another interesting post, keep em coming!
And I thought I knew everything there was to know about this subject…well, now I do – nice post. Keep up the good work, Anna Kent @ H
I’ve had everything from very long to very, very short. My hair is naturally very straight, and in the last few years I’ve had it permed a few times. It’s really thick, which is a mixed blessing. I’m looking at putting a streak of blue in it now. Short bob works well for me these days!
Grr. Stupid computer. I was trying to say that my hair is naturally curly, and my stylist gets way more volume and curl out of it than I can…even if I am using the same diffuser.
One thing I won’t ever do again: bangs. There are probably women with curly hair who look good in bangs, but I am not one of them. Mine would never do what I wanted them to, and growing them out was a completely nightmare (it’s been 15 years, but I haven’t forgotten).
I love getting my haircut. I only do it about every three months (my hair is shoulder-length…ish), but my stylist (who is also my ex-brother-in-law) is brilliant. I think my hair looks okay when I do it, but it’s nothing like when he does it. It’s natura
I just had my hair trimmed to just past my shoulders. It grows pretty fast so by the time really cold winter weather rolls around, it will add even more warmth to my neck and shoulders. It’s naturally wavy so I can wear it down or in a pony tail. And even though I only get my hair cut twice a year, I do swing my hair and look in the store window reflection after leaving the hair cutting place.
I had a BIG chance last week, and I am still checking it in every reflective surface around. I have bangs for the first time in ten years and I LOVE it!!.
I was so scared! And taking in consideration that I´m a extreme-make-over kind of girl…. I have gone from waist length to just over the chin, from straight to Marilyn Monroe curly, from brunette to blond and back(with a stop in the violet station). It was scary but so worth it!
Some of you guys are sooooo much more adventurous than I could ever be. Like I said, the big change this time around: A fringe. And it’s not even a major fringe. Just a kind of trimming to make a sorta-fringe. But whatever. I used to get my hair cut twice a year, but then I discovered the wonderful world of STYLES. And that I could have my hair cut in a STYLE rather than just chopped off. And I’ve never looked back since (although it does tend to get expensive).
If I’m maintaining a haircut, I have to go at least every 8 weeks. My hair grows fast. I’ve also got color in my hair (that pesky gray) and a few well-placed highlights. I do have to go back almost every 6 weeks to keep that looking, well, normal. I’m currently growing my hair out of my style (shorter in back, longer in front). I’m attempting to grow out my bangs and doing quite well with that and growing out the length to above shoulder (harder for me to do than bangs). As for copying the hairstyle I walk out with…never. It looks good, well fabulous that day…after that, it’s back to my syling. sigh…my hairdresser can make it curly (it’s naturally curly) and make the curls look great, or she straightens it with a straightner. I’ve never quite gotten the hang of either styles so it’s always in between curly and sort of straight…wavy. I’m sort of beyond the point of letting my hair dictate my day. I just go with it. What woman is ever happy about her hair every single day? I don’t know of any.
Recently, I cut my shoulder lengthish (it never grew past my shoulders for some reason) to about a page boy length. I’d always wanted short hair. But I’m bad at styling so it never looked as good as it should have. So one day, after getting tired of hearing my mom tell me that I should get my hair braided, I decided to chop it all off (i.e. I went to a hair salon at the Mall of America and got it cut basically all off.). I now have a really small afro that I’m hoping to grow out naturally. Should be interesting.
Jean, after 12 years of having my hair in dreadlocks, last year I cut them all off…down to a short afro. Then, at the ripe old age of 56 I discovered wigs! Yes wigs! I have discovered I can have my hair any way I want, without a hairdresser, any chemicals, any dyes or any products that have to be constantly washed from my hair, put into my hair, rinsed in, left on.I don’t have to wait for it to grow out, or grow in. I just shake, brush and go. I think hair is one of the most fun things we women play and experiment with. I cannot wait until my natural hair is all gray! I am looking forward to seeing the shades of gray that will come in!!
Since last year I have done cuts, weaves, extensions, dyes and a million other things, but the wigs are the most fun. It’s like dress up every day:)
Like Tee, I have fine hair and have kept it short–above the ears–for years. That meant a haircut every 4 weeks. Well, I’ve decided to grow it out a little and just went 8 weeks between cuts. It looked quite good when she did it, but it’s a new style for me and I don’t quite have the knack for it yet. She showed me how to tease the ends so it would have some bounce and not lay flat. So far it just appears as though I’m someone who doesn’t know how to comb her hair properly.
But yes, I love haircut day, and most especially, cut and color day.
Having been “blessed” with fine hair, it’s become more of a challenge to me as I get older. But I think I’m still winning the game. It’s very short, but lately I’ve had my hairdresser keep the layers longer than usual. So far, so good. But a haircut is needed every 5-6 weeks, in order to keep the style fresh with minimum fuss. I definitely spend less time on my hair these days than I used to. Basically, it’s comb and go.
Back to the haircut–if it’s not done right to begin with, then the rest doesn’t work either. Is anyone ever satisfied completely with their hair–whether it’s texture, color, style, etc? Very few, I think. Hair is one of those things we can change anytime. And if we don’t like it after a cut, just wait a couple of weeks and it’s already changing again!
