Hey, Traveling's Not All Bad

reoHappyTravellerFor someone who likes to travel, I really should get better at it.  Amongst my friends, family, and acquaintances, I am the worst when it comes to travel sickness.  Buses, airplanes, cars, boats (my god, boats) – you name, I’d get sick in it.  Hey, I got seasick when I went ocean kayaking, for God’s sake.

But it’s not all bad. Recently I got something called SeaBands, which retail for between $5 and $20 (depending on the brand, aka real or not), and are essentially hair elastics embedded with balls that you slip onto your wrists, about 30 minutes or so before whatever vomit-inducing trip is coming up.  The balls exert pressure on your acupuncture points, and voila!  Nausea gone.  I’ve discovered it only works if it’s pressing onto the exact spot; a couple millimeters off, and the nausea returns.  But it does mean that I’ve had the most comfortable flying experience in recent memory.

Another good recent experience: When I was flying to Hong Kong, Korean Air gave me a twelve-hour layover at the airport.  To compensate for the inconvenience, they also gave me a room at the Hyatt Regency and meal vouchers at their restaurant.  Sweeeeeeet.

Have you had any good travelling experiences you’d like to share?

Hiya, Hearing about Japan and the earthquick. Wondering if this will affect all the medicine they were doing into acupuncture.

Congratulations for posting such a useful weblog. Your weblog isn’t only informative and also very artistic too. There usually are very couple of people who can write not so simple articles that creatively. Keep up the great work !!

Alexis, I’ve gotten motion sickness in an IMAX theatre as well! I now know, if forced to go to one, to close my eyes at certain points.

I was passing through and read Jean’s post–my heart goes out to her. It takes very little to get me queasy, even sitting too close to the screen in an IMAX theater. I take a medication that works very well, but it’s a heavy duty antihistamine so I’m pretty dopey by the time I get to where I’m going. I usually need someone to point me in the right direction at the end of the jetway.

I figure better stoned than sick any day. But hey, if the Seabands work, more power to you! And LeeB, I just had a friend come back from the Mediterranean and she talked about that ferry ride. The weather was too rough for the boat to even land, so they sat out in the water and bobbed around like a cork, waiting for conditions to improve. In the meantime, one of the staff came around and handed out plastic bags for people like me. My friend loves that kind of stuff–she says it’s like being on a roller coaster. Uh, whoopee?

Sigh; I can only dream of being upgraded on those 12+ hour long-haul flights. How and when would they upgrade you?

LinnieGayl – Yup. Still have yet to take a cruise. I’d be on deck the entire time, if I could.

Two times I received a last-minute business class upgrade flying back from Europe to the U.S. Each time was such an unexpected surprise. And yes, they really do fly very differently than the rest of us.

And Jean, I share your misery of motion sickness. I have never dared to even consider a cruise, figuring I’d be sick the entire time.

Oh, Jean, that’s awful that you suffer from motion sickness. But score on the room at the Hyatt Regency!

I don’t have a problem with motion sickness at all but one time when I was taking a ferry from Santorini to Mykonos in Greece, I was reading my book on the inside cabin and looked up to see a woman using a clear plastic bag to … well I’m sure you get the drift. That made me think “ack, she’s going to make me get sick by doing that!” So I headed out to the small deck and enjoyed the sunshine and beautiful blue water.
