On my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

Law

I will do my best to be
Honest and Fair,
Friendly and Helpful,
Considerate and Caring,
Courageous and Strong, and
Responsible for what I say and do,
And to
respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout.

Motto

“Be Prepared.”

Slogan

“Do a Good Turn Daily”

It has been a long long time since I was in Scouts. I started out as a Brownie, and then moved away to a different town and they didn’t have Girl Scouts but instead had Camp Fire Girls. Still I do have fond memories of going to meetings, earning my badges and selling a lot of candy.

The reason I am mentioning Girl Scouts is that they turn 100 today, and there are a lot of special activities planned.

Girl Scouts in New York will be lighting the Empire State Building green and joining a flash mob around the Flatiron Building in Midtown Manhattan.

Girl Scouts in Arizona will have lunch with the Governor, and girls in Sacramento, California will visit the Legislature.

In Nebraska, they are breaking ground for a new outdoor education centre in Lincoln, and starting an online fundraising campaign to raise $100,000 for girls in one day.

And Scouts from Texas and Oklahoma are going to Six Flags Over Texas ( I hate to say this but that sounds like a lot more fun than lunch with the governor.)

And FYI, if you haven’t bought your Girl Scout Cookies yet, you probably shouldn’t delay. I am told that the cookie selling season is coming to a close.

Do you have fond memories of your time in Scouts? Did your daughters join too? Do you think organization like this help young girls with their self-esteem?

Not only was I a Scout, but I was also a leader when my daughters were in grade school and junior high. Living in the D. C. area, I decided we would have democratic meetings with votes on just about everything and a rotating list of president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary. Every scout got to be each of those positions at least twice during the year. President planned the meeting, vice president the activity, treasurer collected the dime dues, and secretary wrote the minutes. I just loved it when the minutes read, “We had fun.”

I loved being a brownie! My mom was troop leader for a year for my brownie and my older sister’s girl scouts troops and I still remember the boxes of cookies that we had to sort and give to the girls for delivery.
Now I always buy cookies. I’m pretty much a thin mints girl. Just haven’t been able to get into the other flavors.

njoireading it sounds like you had an awesome experience in girl scouts. It’s nice to hear about all they do for the kids in their care.

Never was in the Girl Scouts; not sure why. But the friends I knew who were in it seemed to like it a lot.

In during some research I was amazed at all that Girl Scouts teaches. Girls of eight are learning money management like how to save, and how to budget and plan ahead.

njoireading – thanks for sharing. I love hearing stories like this. Sounds like you had a very strong and active group.

I was a Girl Scout through high school graduation and that membership was very important in forming myself as I grew up. I lived in a very small town (750 people) with not a lot of opportunities for anything. By being a Girl Scout I was able to go to a summer camp where I participated in musical shows, backpacking on Isle Royale, and canoe trips. I also participated in Wider Opportunities, spending 10 days in Florida and on another trip 10 days in Washington DC. For a girl from a tiny town these were unheard of opportunities. By the time I went to college I was pretty self-confident in my abilities and what I could do. Not all was from Girl Scouts, but a lot of it was.
