Frozen Fruit Snacks

Years ago, during a particularly hot summer spell, a friend told me about her favorite hot weather snack. She would clean a bunch of seedless grapes, put them in Ziploc bags, and freeze them. I was a bit skeptical, but gave it a try. Wow! I was instantly hooked on frozen grapes. They’re a bit sweet (depending on the variety), cold, and juicy. And best of all, they’re a healthier snack than an ice cream bar.

Years later frozen grapes are still a summer staple in my home. But recently I’ve started wondering about the possibility of other frozen fruits. I regularly buy big bags of frozen mango chunks to use in fruit smoothies. About a month ago, caught without any yogurt for a smoothie, I decided to give the frozen mango chunks a try. Wonderful! Another easy, cooling, healthy snack.

Yesterday someone told me that they’ve been freezing watermelon for summer snacks! I did a quick web search and discovered all kinds of clever ways to cut and freeze watermelon, including cute cookie cutter shapes. I’m definitely going to give frozen watermelon a try later this weekend, although I think I’ll just cut a few cubes and put them on a plate in the freezer.

But what about other frozen fruit? I can’t imagine eating a frozen apple or pear, and somehow frozen citrus doesn’t sound great. But what about some other fruits? Have you ever tried any frozen fruit snacks? If so, what are your favorites? And if not frozen fruit, do you have any other favorite summer snacks?

Linniegayle, yes they do turn darker in the freezer, not exactly brown, but not pristine looking either. And yes, we just slice ’em and throw ’em ziploc bags.

Victoria S and Leigh. Okay, you’ve convinced me. I’ll have to try the frozen bananas. This may sound silly, but do they turn brown in the freezer. Based on what VictoriaS said I’d just slice one and put it in a ziploc bag.

LeeB, Thanks. That’s good information about the blueberries. I probably wouldn’t have dried them off enough.

Gail, I do use frozen bananas in smoothies. You’re right, they’re a really good thickener. I just never thought to eat them straight frozen.

I really like frozen bananas but I wasn’t fond of frozen grapes. I haven’t tried anything else.

Well my favorite is frozen chocolate bananas. Not sure how healthy that treat is but they sure are delicious!

As for frozen blueberries, if you buy them fresh and then freeze them, you need to dry them thoroughly. It’s quite a hassle. Otherwise if you freeze them, they turn mushy.

I’ll have to try the frozen grapes, they do sound yummy.

A tip for smoothie fans, while I have never simply eaten frozen banana chunks, they are a wonderful thickener for smoothies.

Frozen bananas ARE super yummy. When you have those less than pretty bananas and don’t know what to do, slice them like you would for cereal, pop them in a ziploc bag and they are sweeter than the frozen grapes (which, by the way are excellent).

Maggie B, I love fresh blueberries and cherries. I’ll definitely have to give them a try frozen. Frozen bananas just don’t sound good to me for some reason. But I’m fairly picky about fresh bananas. I like them at the point when they first ripen, about as close to green as they can get without being green :)

And yes, fruit smoothies are a great way to use up fruit.

My husband loves frozen blueberries and I know several people who swear by frozen cherries. I’ve seen frozen bananas offered before but I tend to like my fruit fresh and room temp., so I can’t vouch for them personally.

We love smoothies at our place. Great way to make use of fruit reacing its end.
