Favorite Movie Kisses
One of my favorite scenes in a romantic movie is The Kiss. In many films dealing with romance there are lots of kisses but there is one kiss that is emphasized. The scene is highlighted through background music and dramatic setting. The moment is at a special point in the plot. We have reached a place where the kiss has meaning. Somehow it has become a pivot point for our two characters. And that kiss, that moment can often be the image most associated with that film. The following kisses are some of my personal favorites, in no particular order.
In The Princess Bride we are told: “Since the invention of the kiss, there have only been five kisses that were rated the most passionate, the most pure. This one left them all behind.” I can’t vouch for that but the scene is certainly beautiful.
The impossible happened when my favorite romance novel of all time was turned into my favorite television mini-series of all time. This outstanding production of Pride and Prejudice starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle ended with my personal favorite romantic kiss.
This is an iconic screen kiss which hundreds have tried to copy. None have come close to the original.
The Quiet Man
This is an absolutely beautiful kiss. Stunning cinematography, handsome leads and a well enacted execution set it apart from your average screen kiss. I thought it brilliant when Stephen Spielberg revived it in E.T. The full effect of this one requires not a picture but a clip from the movie.
In this moment breathtaking scenery and handsome leads are aided by a fabulous musical score.
Proving that a kiss doesn’t have to be intense to be meaningful are Sam and Natalie from Love Actually. Sam starts his romantic tale by asking if there is anything “ Worse than the total agony of being in love?” The tale has its peak with this kiss.
This gets points for being one of the most acrobatic kisses I have ever seen. It is also a very sweet one.
No kiss list can be complete without this couple. What a love story!
Perhaps the most copied kiss of any movie kiss in history; even in pictures the smoldering sexual chemistry of the two participants just explodes.
This is the closing scene of the film, a moment when a man finally grows up and realizes that he is about to leave behind the greatest thing that ever happened to him. Wisely he decides that would be a big mistake.
So there they are, my top ten favorite screen kisses. I am sure your list would be a little different. Which ones would your list include that I didn’t cover? Which ones do you completely agree with?

I have to show some thanks to the writer just for bailing me out of this particular dilemma. Just after checking through the world wide web and coming across principles which were not beneficial, I believed my life was over. Living without the presence of strategies to the issues you have resolved all through the report is a critical case, and the kind that could have negatively damaged my entire career if I had not noticed your web blog. Your personal competence and kindness in handling all the stuff was crucial. I’m not sure what I would’ve done if I had not discovered such a point like this. I’m able to at this time look ahead to my future. Thanks very much for your reliable and results-oriented guide. I will not be reluctant to endorse the sites to any person who should receive recommendations about this subject.
*you have a great blog here! would you like to make some invite posts on my blog?
Anton Yelchin and Hope Davis in “”Hearts in Atlantis.””
The kiss at the end of Green Card between Gérard Depardieu and Andie MacDowell is so full of promise. It is romance at it’s best.
The film “”Cinema Paridiso”” has an exquisite sequence near the end that is a collage of great screen kisses. Fabulous!
Hello, I think your website could possibly be having web browser
compatibility problems. When I take a look at your blog in Safari, it looks fine however, when opening in Internet Explorer, it has some overlapping issues.
I just wanted to give you a quick heads up! Besides that, wonderful blog!
This kiss: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsLRd9hRKiU
I remember watching the movie – First Knight- years ago on my VCR with my sister. We didn’t like the movie, but we rewound this scene about five times :). I still remember it.
My two are:
Colin Firth and Renee Zellweger at the end of Bridget Jones’s Diary (already mentioned)
and between Kevin Costner and Annette Bening at the end of Open Range. He kisses her and says, “”I’m going to give you one of those everyday.””
Melt.
It appears in my opinion that this site doesnt acquire in a Motorola Droid. Are other persons having the similar issue? I enjoy this web site as well as dont want to should miss the idea any time I am away from my own computer.
And then there was a little Australian movie starring Piper Laurie — and Mel Gibson as a mentally challenged man. “”Tim.”” The kiss. OMG, that kiss! INCREDIBLE. Moving. And very very hot.
Well, with AAR’s recent turn to reviewing M&Ms, I’ve got to mention Tom Selleck and Kevin Kline in In & Out.
I can’t believe no one has mentioned the end of LOTR The Return of the King when Aragorn (the yummy Viggo Mortenson) realizes Arwen (the lucky Liv Tyler) isn’t dead after all. He really lays one on her! Swoon.I also really ike the scene in the Keira Knightley version of P&P when Darcy proposes the first time and she says no. You can see awesome tension between Matthew McFayden and Keira in that scene, even though there is no kiss until later.
LOL! I was thinking exactly that – why has no one mentioned Aragorn and Arwen? And I know it doesn’t happen anything like that in the books, but it is just so wonderful, after he has believed her dead and just got on with helping Frodo save Middle Earth, believing there’s nothing left there for him.
Oh, yes but Viggo can kiss!

The one an only kiss between Josh Lucas and Reese Witherspoon at the end of Sweet Home Alabama. Worth waiting for.
You have really mentioned nearly all of my favorites. I would only add:
– The kiss in the final scene, under the rain in Four weddings and a funeral.
– Isn’t there another rainy kiss in the ‘Pride & Prejudice’ with K. Knightly?
– The Kiss Harrison Ford gives Sean Young in Blade Runner
– Gone With the Wind, Rhett & Scarlett. Not a very politically correct kiss, but unforgettable anyway: ‘… wants to carry the memory of your kisses into battle with him. Never mind about loving me, you’re a woman sending a soldier to his death with a beautiful memory. Scarlett! Kiss me! Kiss me… once… ‘
So many great kisses! I love the scene in Romeo+Juliet where Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio kiss for the first time.
The most memorable kisses for me have been on tv.
La Femme Nikita: Michael & Nikita – every time they had to act like lovers and, of course, when they were on the boat
American verion of The Office: Jim & Pam – Casino Night eppisode when Jim follows Pam and kisses her after he’s told her he loves her
British verison of The Office – when Dawn comes back to the Christmas party and kisses Tim
Cheers – Sam & Diane’s frist kiss. I loved that they drove each other crazy but the attraction was undeniable.
Gilmore Girls – Luke & Lorelai at the Firefly Inn when Luke grabs and kisses her (very hot!) and Kurt runs by them naked having a nightmare (LOL!)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer – Buffy & Spike
I agree about Thornton & Margaret. That was a great moment! I liked Han & Leia’s kiss but when I was a kid I had such a crush on Mark Hamill that the kiss between Luke & Leia was more memorable for me. of course, that was before we knew they were brother & sister, lol.
The Princess Bride kiss is definitely my #1 kiss scene, followed by the kiss in Beauty and the Beast.
@ pwnn
Even after all these years, I still cry when I see the ending of The Way We Were
LeeF, oh yeah – when she brushes the hair from his face … sob city
I just wish they kept the cut scene in where it explained why they eventually divorced. She was named as a communist (by her former college friend) and if they stayed married his career would have been destroyed and she wouldn’t have that.
I am extremely inspired along with your writing abilities and also with the layout to your weblog. Is this a paid topic or did you customize it yourself? Either way stay up the nice high quality writing, it is rare to see a nice blog like this one these days..
One of my favorites is actually from a TV show– Bones. While I don’t watch it regularly anymore, I was a huge fan for a while. Booth and Bones’ first kiss, in an earlier season’s Christmas episode, was so good.
Notorious with Cary Grant and I. Bergman
Ditto to many above especially Romancing The Stone, From Here To Eternity (most of the racier footage actually hit the cutting room floor. Whew), Breakfast At Tiffanys, The Quiet Man, The Princess Bride
A few not mentioned:
Notorious: Cary Grant & Ingrid Bergman in their Hayes Code skirting minutes long kiss
The Thomas Crown Affair: Pierce Brosnan & Rene Russo: The “”Do you want To dance, or do you want to dance?”” kiss
Gone With The Wind: Clark Cable & Vivien Leigh – the “”You need kissing badly. You should be kissed, and often. And by someone who knows how.”” kiss
The Way We Were: Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand
A couple more:
Gilda: Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford – “”I hate you too Johnny. I hate you so much, I think I’m going to die from it”” she says breathily into his ear before she kisses him.
To Have and Have Not: Humphrey Bogart & Lauren Bacall. She says while sitting his lap trying to seduce him -“”It’s even better when you help.””””
Here are my two of my favorite movie kisses:
“”Persuasion”” (the 1995 version) with Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root
“”The Lake House”” with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dAdUO8m4zo
Both are very poignant, perhaps more so because the protagonists in both movies have waited a long time to be together.
My all time favorite kiss is the “”practice kiss”” between best friends Watts and Keith in John Hughes’ “”Some Kind of Wonderful””. Check it out on the YouTubes: http://youtu.be/I_3pKN09DAo
I also like the kiss between Keanu Reeves and Aitana Sanchez-Gijon after the grape crushing scene in “”A Walk In the Clouds””. I think Keanu Reeves is one of the best on-screen kissers out there – he always looks like he’s absolutely in love with his female costar.
Edited to add: I also love the kiss between the reuinted Ennis Delmar and Jack Twist in “”Brokeback Mountain””. http://youtu.be/44ZZN9BqlEE?t=21s
Love the kiss in A Walk in the Clouds. That movie has a wonderful love story.
I may have thought about this too much (and maybe made a fan video or two along these lines;).
DDL and Madeline Stowe in Last of the Mohicans definitely at the top of my list!
Definitely any kiss in Firelight…one of the most romantic movies ever!
North and South, of course.
Liam Neeson and Patricia Arquette in Ethan Frome.
Isabelle Adjani and Vincent Perez in Queen Margot.
Jeremy Northam and Gwenyth Paltrow in Emma.
Robert Redford and Meryl Streep in Out of Africa.
Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman in Australia.
Aidan Quinn and Madeline Stowe in Blink.
Edward Norton and Naomi Watts in The Painted Veil.
Colin Firth and Renee Zellwegger in Bridget Jones’s Diary.
Timothy Olyphant and Jennifer Garner in Catch and Release.
Timothy Olyphant and Katie Holmes in Go.
Jude Law and Cameron Diaz in The Holiday.
Eric Stoltz and Mary Stuart Masterson in Some Kind of Wonderful (best teen movie kiss ever!)
And for the Bollywood fans out there:
Hritihk Roshan and Aishwarya Rai in Dhoom 2
Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rain in Jodhaa Akhbar (technically not a kis, but shows a Bollywood non-kiss can be just as sexy and romantic)
Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor in Jab We Met
Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma in Band Baaja Baarat
@ Kim T. Definitely the DDL & Madeline Stowe kiss in Last of the Mohicans.
One *almost* kiss I didn’t mention is between Aishwarya Rai and Martin Henderson in Bride and Prejudice during the dream turned nightmare segment.
Love that almost smooch. So intense and so revealing.
These are all good choices but I have to add:
The kiss between George Peppard and Audrey Hepburn at the end of Breakfast at Tiffany’s
The kiss between Katniss and Peeta from The Hunger Games while they are in the cave
And lastly the kiss at the end of Something like Wonderful
Several of mine are already mentioned but I””ll add:
–Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman in “”Notorious””
–That very sweet kiss between Jake and Sam at the end of “”Sixteen Candles””
Cary & Ingrid, that’s the first ‘Kiss in he movies’ I thought of. It’s said that because of censorship they could not kiss more that X seconds so they kissed, and then they talked, and then kissed again and then caress, and then kiss… If this is true, the perfect example of how a good thing can come from a bad one.
What great choices Maggie. And you are right – the kiss is usually a very special point in the movie.
I need to think on my favorites.
You forgot North & South between Mr. Thornton and Ms. Hale. *Sigh*
And the kiss from Never Been Kissed with Drew Barrymore.
I second the John Thornton/Margaret Hale one from North and South.
And add these:
The kiss between Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in Romancing the Stone, during the scene where they’re dancing at the village feast, and they stop dancing and kiss and everything goes on swirling around them. With fireworks.
The kiss between Aidan Quinn and Sandra Bullock in Practical Magic, when she goes to his hotel to confess to the killing. (I confess I may sometimes just re-watch the movie for that scene alone).
The first kiss between Han Solo and Princess Leia onboard the Millennium Falcon in The Empire Strikes Back. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLWwmEUk0yg
The kiss Rob Lowe gives Mare Winningham at the end of St. Elmo’s Fire, just before he gets on the bus. He slides her hat off her head and kisses her forehead, just that, but we see his face and the emotion on it, and it’s one of my favourite moments in that entire film.
I’m sure I could go on and on, but those are the ones that come instantly to mind. Great topic!
HAN AND LEIA YES YES YES!
I third Han and Leia- love that kiss!
I fourth Han and Leia. That kiss has always been a favourite of mine.
Other favourite SF and fantasy kisses are Captain Jack Harkness kissing first Rose and than the Doctor in the season 1 finale of the reimagined Doctor Who. The impact has been somewhat diluted by the Doctor kissing everything in sight in latter episodes, but back in 2005 it was truly special.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4uCkQv3Uxg
Or how about Gene Hunt and Alex Drake dancing to Spandau Ballet’s “”True”” and almost, but not quite kissing before they are interrupted by (quite literally) the Devil in the penultimate episode of the British time travel series “”Ashes to Ashes””?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwttK5tJZGE
Another good one from the same production team is “”Eternal Law””, a little known British fantasy series about angels posing as lawyers in Yorkshire. The final episode ends with one of our angels kissing the human woman with whom he’s fallen in love on top of York minster. It’s actually the kiss that starts the countdown towards the apocalypse, but it’s so lovely that you don’t care.
Not online unfortunately.
And here is another beloved SF kiss that very few people here will know, namely Commander Cliff Alistair Maclaine and Lieutenant Tamara Jagellowsk kissing in the 1960s German SF TV series “”Space Patrol Orion””. I love both their first kiss in episode 5, which is followed by Tamara expressing her relief that the kiss was rather average, as well as the decidedly non-average kiss at the very end of the final episode.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_rSbPf6b9E
Not SF or fantasy, but still a favourite: Murdoch kissing a female vet who helped him against a bunch of villains in an episode of “”The A-Team””. The actors were married in real life, that’s probably why the kiss works so well.
Alas, another one that’s not online.
Yes, Han & Leia, THAT was a KISS!
Han and Leia, love the actors, love the line (“”i love you. i know.”” sigh) — definitely the best movie kiss of all time for me.
My favorite one is the kiss in the rain in “”The Notebook.””
Only two memorable kisses stand out in my mind just now:
John Thornton (Richard Armitage) and Margaret Hale (Daniela Denby-Ashe) in North and South
Also, every kiss between Sophie Marceau & Stephen Dillane in Firelight
I agree with of your choices….
The kiss in Buffalo 66 by Vincent Gallo, so sweet
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x76n6i_buffalo-66_shortfilms#.UZ9dm4IWg6U
And North and South http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkYBBlfhupU
