Fascinating Fascinators
Let’s be perfectly honest: the best part of the Royal Wedding fashion are the hats. Sometimes I truly wish hats were fashionable in the US. If I could pull it off, I would totally wear hats as statement pieces. My friends always mock me because whenever we went out shopping in London, I would be irresistibly drawn to the headbands and headbands with a half-veil, a la Chelsy Davies’ hat:
(Alas, this is an awful picture of her. Cute hat, though.)
“What, are you trying to be Lady GaGa?” my friends asked. No— clearly, I was just trying to be British.
Anyway, some of my favorites from yesterday’s festivities:
Lady Frederick Windsor: simple yet dramatic.
Princess Letizia of Spain: fresh and fashionable- and absolutely gorgeous.
Queen Elizabeth II: sunny! I am disappointed she didn’t wear a crown, though. You’d think this would be the occasion to break out the hardware.
Princess Marie-Chantall of Greece: one of my favorite “statement” hats- unique and beautiful without looking like, er, the female reproductive system.
What were your favorites?

Good article. You made some useful points.
Impressive David Beckham. David Beckham to begin in steamy Super Bowl advertising campaign, naked, crowned hottest guy worldwide. I’m advised David strips down and shows off his body for new multi million dollar Super Bowl XLVI advertisement. Bodywear and underwear collaboration vs Tim Tebow for H&M. Beckham actually confirms – of course – “I Love Underwear’ :-) Get your own soccer equipment at soccer.com, gift cards, 20% to 50%, free shipping Valentine deals… http://goo.gl/adpVy
Have you ever considered about adding a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is valuable and everything. Nevertheless think about if you added some great visuals or video clips to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with images and videos, this site could undeniably be one of the greatest in its niche. Very good blog!
Greetings! Extremely useful guidance on this write-up! It is the small alterations that make the greatest modifications. Thanks a whole lot for sharing!
Woah! I’m really loving the template/theme of this website. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s tough to get that “perfect balance” between superb usability and visual appeal. I must say that you’ve done a fantastic job with this. Additionally, the blog loads very fast for me on Internet explorer. Superb Blog!
From Wikipedia:
“A fascinator is a headpiece, a style of millinery. The word originally referred to a fine, lacy head covering akin to a shawl and made from wool or lace. The term had fallen almost into disuse by the 1970s. In the early 21st century, the term has made a comeback, but the meaning has slightly changed; it is now used to describe a delicate, slightly-to-very frivolous head decoration worn almost exclusively by women. A fascinator may be worn instead of a hat to occasions where hats were traditionally worn—such as weddings—or as an evening accessory, when it may be called a cocktail hat. It is generally worn with fairly formal attire.”
Ellen AAR- when I saw Victoria Beckhams shoes, I was impressed. The woman is 7 months pregnant, and she’s wearing heels that have to be 5 inches tall. I do like the look of high heels; I just wish I could wear them.
It’s kind of funny, but back when Louisa May Alcott was writing Little Women, the term fascinator was used for a fancy shawl. I loved Mrs. Middleton’s outfit and I really liked Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxemborg. She looked very sweet and I was especially happy that she wore kitten heels. I loathe extremely high heels and those ghastly ones that Victoria Beckham wore were especially ugly. Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden looked lovely too. All these ladies wore hats and I’ll admit to liking real hats better than fascinators.
Princess Beatrice of York took the prize for the most ugly hat. It looked like H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu settled down on her head.
Oooooooooh I loved the hats!
Jean, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson was a big YES for me! I thought she totally pulled that off. I could not believe the richness of that color. And head to toe. That takes some kind of moxie to pull that off :-)
Lee, I thought (Beatrice) “How did she get the nerve to wear that!”. But I’m glad she did. I have never seen anything so fascinating (no pun intended).
I’m not a big Victoria Beckham fan, but her outfit was fabulous too. And speaking of fabulous…I never could see what the big interest in David Beckham was until the wedding! Boy did the clothes ever make that man.
The Spencer girls all had great hats, and I liked the one Miriam Gonzalez wore, the black hat with the roses. I saw a picture of her outfit and she was stunning. The Queen looked really good in all that yellow, and I thought Camila’s’ coat and hat were gorgeous.
I am curious why the Prime Minister’s wife didn’t wear a hat, I mean I don’t think you absolutely have to, but aside from the women of different cultures, I didn’t see any woman without a hat but her. What’s up with that?
Peggyo, I think you should go for it. Nothing says “special” to a woman like hats. I belong to a traditional Baptist church, and some of the hats I’ve seen and worn are great!
Why are the little hats call “fascinators”? Beside the obvious that they are fascinating.
I am now totally stuck on hat, hatter, hattiest! Am searching for another Treacy hat that looked like a red ribbon (too early in the morning for me). My children live in fear that for their college graduations I will find one of those statements.
Loved the hats too. Definitely thought Princess Beatrice’s was the most eye-catching only because it was of the “what was she thinking?” variety.
I echo the sentiment about Lady F. Windsor and the Spanish princess, who I think are absolutely stunning women. Joss Stone looked awesome in flamingo. Tara Parker Tomkinson – I’m still undecided about all that electric royal blue, but her outfit definitely stands out. This page has a pretty extension selection of photos, and a heavy dose of snark.

Did some more googling. Apparently all the wedding party hats were designed by an Irishman, Philip Treacy. I have to say, some of them are pretty unusual.
