How did I miss this one? Somehow, Lifetime’s summer series Drop Dead Diva wasn’t just under my radar, it was completely outside of my radar. Then, a friend happened to mention that she was doing a “Drop Dead Diva-thon” over the Memorial Day weekend. I wanted to say, “what’s that?” but instead did a quick web search and then turned on Lifetime to check it out. Four hours later, I was hooked.
The trailer outlines the premise of the show, in which an aspiring model and a lawyer are killed at the same time, with the model ending up in the lawyer’s body.
Now I know I wouldn’t like this show much at all if it were all about Deb, the aspiring (and seemingly self-involved) model. But instead, all we have are glimpses of Deb in Jane. And I just adore Jane. Brooke Elliott does a fantastic job playing Jane, the curvy, size-16 brilliant lawyer. She brings humor, wit, and heart to the part, and on those rare occasions when she belts out a song, what a voice.
The supporting cast is fantastic. I particularly enjoy Margaret Cho as Jane’s assistant. In the few episodes that I caught last weekend, there were some really fun guest appearances including Paula Abdul, Rosie O’Donnell, Delta Burke, and Liza Minnelli. From the previews I’ve seen for the upcoming season, it looks like Paula Abdul will be making another appearance.
Season one ended on a cliff-hanger, with Jane resigning from the law firm, and facing potential disbarment. Jane’s man-situation had also improved. Not only was fellow lawyer Tony interested in her, but Deb’s love Grayson seemed to be recognizing something in her as well. And then there’s that mystery husband who appeared at her door just as the season ended.
AAR’s Abi did some interesting posts last year, connecting this show to heavy heroes and heroines and friendless heroines over at AAR’s News blog.
I’ll be glued to my chair on Sunday at 9pm when the new season starts. I can’t wait to see what happens with Jane and the rest of the cast. I’m also going to be searching out the rest of season one.

SEASON ONE IS OUT ON DVD
Cindy, now that is quite an interesting point you make, the “flashes of Deb” vs. “flashes of Jane.”
Now, I’ve not been able to see all of the first season, so I’m going off what bits I’ve seen, but…Grayson (Deb’s would have been fiance who was also offered an interview/job with Jane’s firm because of Jane) obviously sees attractive things in Jane. While it could be flashes of Deb he’s seeing — which is what it appears to be at first — given Grayson’s words at Deb’s funeral (even her “friends” questioned Grayson’s saying that Deb was “selfless” or “generous” or whatever like adjective he used, and Deb/Jane herself questions it). So it seems it is more in Deb’s mind to try and be a bit more like Jane — or, indeed, anyone who is not selfish or self-centered as Deb now realizes she was.
Another point — the late Deb was younger (by 8 years) than the current Jane…and as those of us who have lived to 32 (and beyond) know, quite a lot of personal development (at least one hopes) goes on between 23 and 32. (I may not have their proposed ages exact, but I think I’m close.)
Then there is Deb — and now Jane’s — best friend, Stacey, who has worried that now that Deb/Jane is “smart,” she’ll lose her very best friend.
And there is Jane, who, like most of us, even if we wouldn’t want to admit it, would appreciate the having the benefit of the Deb’s fashion/beauty knowledge applied to us in a kind way…and I don’t think any honest woman would deny that a dose of Deb’s confidence would do us well.
Guardian angel Fred also works to help Deb remember Jane and Jane remember Deb, as appropriate…Fred will even go so far as to ask, sometimes, “What would Deb say?” and then “What would Jane say?”
Deb/Jane represent an attempt at a balance and an effort at growth. Deb alone is shallow — but remember, also younger — and is trying to grow. Jane, it seems, has closed herself off to anything but work and seriousness. Deb/Jane are the yin/yang of each other — and I, for one, enjoy having some beauty/fashion tips, pink lip stick, and some toe-tap-booty-bounce along with striving to find a more moral/ relevant/ meaningful place in life. I thought this was especially apparent in tonight’s episode, with Deb/Jane’s eventual confrontation with Jane’s husband. (I’m trying to word that so it doesn’t spoil things for those who haven’t yet seen the episode, while hoping that those who have seen it get my point.)
And having read Abi’s blog about heavy heroes/heroines, I’m looking forward to reading the one about the friendless heroine, though I must say that the impression I have been developing from Jane is that she was/is a very private person (an extension of her professional legal obligations), and so there are these people who pop up in her life (a Mom seemingly out of the blue, a devoted friend from high school, a court bailiff smitten with her, husband no one seemed to know about)…Jane was/is a private gal.
DDD didn’t come here until January and I adore it. I can’t remember if I’ve seen the season finale though because I don’t remember some of what was mentioned.
It’s funny that you see glimpses of Deb in Jane when I see it as glimpses of Jane’s life and ways through Deb. I love it when her brain hurts because Jane was so smart and Deb have never experienced such talents. I also love how she plays with her hair, is flirty and fun all with such charm. They did do an episode early on about her weight and trying to lose it but that donuts were just oh soooo good and cravings were hard to stop!
After that, her weight isn’t really an issue in the show and I love that. I personally want to see her with her ‘evil’ boss but I’m crooked that way ;)
Now if only Defying Gravity would be picked up by some cable show. That was my summer fling last year!

I loved “Drop Dead Diva” from the beginning and even got a friend hooked on it too.
I’m glad to see new people discovering it because I think it’s a “buried treasure” of a show and the lead actress is wonderful.

I am most definitely going to be watching!! ‘though I generally wait up and watch the second (repeat) showing on Sunday, as my dearest hubby, bless him, is not a DDD fan. I so wish I’d tuned in to this show when it first started, as I’ve not seen all of Season 1, but I am HOOKED!
In these trying times, it’s so, so, sooo lovely to have such a wonderful show as this for a positive distraction.
