Coming Soon… September 2017
While we AAR staffers have fairly diverse tastes on the whole, there are some books and authors that pull us together for various reason – we like the authors, we like their writing, we like their storytelling – and into genres that sometimes we don’t read very often. This month, the big draws appear to be historicals, with new titles from Sherry Thomas, Katharine Ashe and Juliana Grey all eagerly awaited by many of us.
A Conspiracy in Belgravia by Sherry Thomas (5 Sept)
I was fairly bowled over by A Study in Scarlet Women and am sure this second instalment in the Lady Sherlock series won’t disappoint. Our heroine is approached by the wife of her dearest friend to find the man she loved years before… but there’s bound to be a lot more to it than meets the eye! – Caz
I know I’m not the only AAR staffer looking forward to Ms. Thomas’ newest Lady Sherlock novel – we love her books! I waited to read the first book so that I could binge read the two of them together (ha!), and in the meantime, I’ve been reading a lot of Sherlock Holmes fanfiction. I’m eager to read Ms. Thomas’ spin on the traditional stories – and I fully expect to love it. – Em
I enjoyed the first book in the Lady Sherlock series and have been waiting impatiently for this second book. I like Ms. Thomas’ storytelling very much. – Keira
This is the second in Ms. Thomas’ Lady Sherlock series. Quite enjoyed the first one so I’m sure this one will be just as intriguing. – Lee
No one does Holmes better than Ms. Thomas, and I’m hoping that her latest Holmes novel is as clever as the first! – Lisa
The Duke by Katharine Ashe (26 Sep)
I loved the first two books in the author’s Devil’s Duke trilogy – which it seems has been extended as there’s another book in the offing, so I suppose that makes it a series now! – and have high hopes for this, the story of the Devil’s Duke himself, Gabriel Hume. Can he really be a devil-worshipping abducter of innocent maidens? – Caz
Ms. Ashe has teased us with references to The Devil’s Duke throughout this spin-off series. In this third book we get to the roots of his nickname and meet the woman who changed his life, Lady Amarantha Vale. Ms. Ashe is one of my most favorite historical authors writing today and has yet to disappoint. Great romance, witty dialogue and a sexy devilish duke – it’s a recipe for success (and for Em’s heart). – Em
Ms. Ashe always knocks it out of the park, and I’m excited to see where her next one goes! – Lisa
A Strange Scottish Shore by Juliana Gray (19 Sep)
I’ve been looking forward to this second instalment in the adventures of Emmeline Truelove for some time. It’s promising to be a really imaginative, inventive series, and I can’t deny I’m already hooked at the prospect of more flirting and bantering between the rather prim Truelove and her gorgeous swain, Lord Silverton. – Caz
I love Ms. Gray in all her incarnations (she also writes wonderful books under the pen name Beatriz Williams) and this series is a delight. Her books are thoughtful, smart and thoroughly addictive. Although I’m hoping for more romance this time around, I’ll take Truelove and Silverton however Ms. Gray wants to deliver them. But kisses. Maybe? – Em
I greatly enjoyed Ms. Gray’s A Most Extraordinary Pursuit, so I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of this book. I’m also fascinated that an author who writes in the voice of Beatriz Williams, can also write a book in such a different voice as Juliana Gray. I’m a big fan of this author. – Keira
I, Eliza Hamilton by Susan Holloway Scott (26 Sep)
After having seen the play–so so so good, guys–I’m longing to know more about Eliza. This fictionalized version of her life is just the ticket. – Dabney
I love historical fiction and I, like many people, have become enchanted by the romance of Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schuyler, who met, married, loved and produced children but were torn apart by infidelity and a bullet. I’m excited to see how the author interprets their lives. – Lisa
Historical fiction featuring Elizabeth Skyler Hamilton sounds perfect for me! The Broadway musical Hamilton didn’t do much for me, but this book looks fabulous! – Shannon
Don’t Let Go by Harlan Coben (26 Sep)
No one writes more cracktastic thrillers than Mr. Coben. Whenever I begin one of his books I don’t want to do ANYTHING but read. His characters are drawn from a world I recognize and it’s clear Mr. Coben believes in true love. – Dabney
I always look forward to Harlan Coben’s stand alone suspense titles, and this latest looks exceptional. I’m pretty sure I’ll be up way past my bedtime once I start reading it. – Shannon

Archangel’s Viper by Nalini Singh (26 Sep)
This is the tenth book in the Guild Hunter series, and admittedly comes at a time when my interest in the series had started to wane. But the title alone says it’s about Venom, the most mysterious and scathing of Raphael’s guard, so of course, I can’t wait to read it. – Mandy
Nalini Singh’s worldbuilding is pure magic, and I can’t wait to once again spend time with the characters of her Guild Hunter series. This tenth installment is Holly’s story, and I’m so excited to watch her finally get her HEA. – Shannon

I have yet to meet a book by this author I haven’t liked :) Part of me cringes at the fact that I just got back from my summer holiday and Christmas-related books are cropping up already!

Too Beautiful to Break by Tessa Bailey (26 Sep)
Ms. Bailey writes reliably sexy and emotional contemporary romance. I’ve enjoyed this series thus far and am eager to read Sage and Belmont’s (eye roll) story.
Em:
Foxglove Copse by Alex Beecroft (4 Sep)
I’ve enjoyed every single book in the Porthkennack series so far and am hopeful this will be yet another excellent addition. Alex Beecroft is a new-to-me author (oft recommended) and the premise – a killer is on the loose – different from all the (loosely linked) stories that preceded it. I’m really looking forward to this one.

The Way to London by Alix Rickloff (19 Sep)
Set during World War II, this historical fiction is a story of a pampered girl from Singapore who comes of age in the grim reality of war-torn England. I’m really looking forward to finding out what a girl, who was brought up with fond indulgence by her now-lost parents, does in the aristocratic gloom of her new homeland. It promises to be a fascinating read.
The Golden House by Salman Rushdie (19 Sep)
Ever since I read Midnight’s Children, I’ve been fascinated by Mr. Rushdie’s stories. His larger-than-life personality adds to the charisma of his writing, and I can’t wait to crack this book open.

Temporary by Sarina Bowen and Sarah Mayberry (12 Sep)
Here’s what I know about this book: the authors. Literally nothing else. But these ladies are auto-buys for me, so the idea of them teaming up is all of the yessssssss.
Play On by Samantha Young (12 Sep)
I adored this author’s On Dublin Street series, but her American set one is still growing on me. This book kicks off another series set in Scotland and I can’t wait. Her sense of place in her home country is perfectly translated onto the page and I’m excited to once again pack my bags for her Scotland.

Provenance by Ann Leckie (26 Sep)
Oh, how do I love thee, Leckie, let me count the ways. I loved Leckie’s Imperial Radch series, and Provenance starts off a new series in the same world, about Ingray who must hunt down the priceless lost artefacts prized by her people, in the midst of an interstellar conflict.
The Brightest Fell by Seanan McGuire (5 Sep)
October Days is my favorite Urban Fantasy private investigator, and in this book she seems all set to discover old, buried secrets of her very odd family. Oh, and she is also getting married to my favorite shape-shifter, Tybalt, the Fae King of Cats.
Maria Rose:
The Final Score by Jaci Burton (12 Sep)
The thirteenth novel in the sexy, fun, Play by Play sports romance series by Jaci Burton is coming full circle, with the son of the couple from the first book, The Perfect Play, realizing his own football future and falling in love along the way. I’ve loved all the books in this series that I’ve read and am really looking forward to this one. The series has been kept fresh by featuring heroes in several different sports, including baseball, hockey, football and even car racing which has made it an easy one to return to time and again.
Arm Candy by Jessica Lemmon (5 Sep)
The description of this one intrigued me – a feisty female bartender who walks on the wild side and a suit and tie wearing clean cut hunk who banter back and forth until a bet between them shows the true nature of their feelings for each other. Sounds like a fun read!
Ride it Out by Cara McKenna (19 Sep)
The final book in the Desert Dogs series is here and I am so excited to have Jeremiah Church’s book in my hands! There’s been a murder mystery story arc through the series which will come to it’s conclusion here, though each book featured a standalone romance. We’ve seen Miah as a secondary character throughout and his relationship with a new police officer in town is sure to be explosive.

Warcross by Marie Lu (12 Sep)
I’ve been wanting to try Marie Lu’s books for some time now, and this, the start of a new series, looks like the perfect opportunity. I’ve heard great things from people whose reading tastes I trust, so I’m excited.

I didn’t know there was a new Ann Leckie! I wrote our DIK for the Imperial Radch books so I’ll definitely check this out.
