Celeb Spotting

I’ve never seen a celebrity before. I’ve been to performances, concerts, etc. (I am still proud of the fact that I was in the same room as J.K. Rowling… in the very back row of Radio City Music Hall while she was on stage) But actually seeing someone famous “in the wild,” so to speak, was a new experience for me. So when a street vendor told my friends and me that Taylor Swift, the multi-platinum and multi-award winning country singer, was in the store next to us, we were understandably excited.

It’s funny how famous people don’t seem real– at least until you’re in a shop with them, listening to their conversation with their friends as they try to decide what to buy. To my delight, she was as beautiful and kind in person as she seems in the media. I didn’t approach her–my friends and I didn’t want to be “that person” that assaults celebrities and gushes over them–but it was still thrilling to be within several feet of the person who, if early predictions are true, is the only artist to outsell Michael Jackson this year. And let me tell you– I don’t think I ever really appreciated the overwhelming nature of the paparazzi until I was stuck in a store with an A-list celebrity, and a crowd of several hundred people were surrounding the door, cameras flashing and faces pressed up against the glass.

Have you ever seen a celebrity before? Who, where, and what happened?[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

Hey, interesting article. The thing is, Oprah, Dr. Phil, and these media people have never tried a REAL diet. I have generally been a fan of the Primal Blueprint. It is much more natural and how we evolved to eat. Take a look at it when you have a chance and let me know what you think. Anyway… cool site… I’m subscribed to your RSS feed now so I’ll check in more often!

I saw Jay Leno in a casino in Las Vegas. What really struck me was how extreme his features were in person – what a big chin, etc. It’s like what you see in real life is so exaggerated so it appears normal on TV.

Similarly, I was on the Oprah show (years ago, long story) and I was surprised at how large her head was relative to her body. I can’t say I thought she was particularly nice, very curt and business like, but she was working so I suppose that’s to be expected.

Finally, I worked at a book signing for Olympic diver Greg Louganis when his autobiography came out (again, many years ago). He was hungry and hadn’t eaten, so they sent me out to Burger King to get him food. He was very nice.

All my sightings were in New York. I saw Irene Pappas near the Plaza Hotel, and a few years later, I was walking down 7th Avenue when I saw Gerard Depardieu and his (then) wife walking toward me (they looked like tired, disgruntled tourists). I didn’t speak to them–but I was wildly looking around for someone who saw what I saw.

I’ve not met any ‘celebrities’ but a footnote to how nice Taylor Swift is.
We’ve just had Children In Need on BBCtv and she was singing on it (beautifully). She also gave £13,000 of her OWN money towards this charity.

A few years ago my son and I were in New York and went to see a revival of Tom Stoppard’s “The Real Thing”. I was talking to my son when I realized that the voice of the woman my other side sounded very familiar. I turned, and it was Lauren Bacall (she definitely gets around). She was there with a friend and they were chatting about Jennifer Ehle (of A&E “Pride & Prejudice” fame), who was starring in the play. It was fun to eavesdrop, but like the other posters, I did not say anything to them as I wanted them to be able to enjoy the play in peace.

I was standing on the corner at 18Th and Market streets in Philly about 7-8 years ago, getting a hot dog from a vendor. I was looking down 18Th street and this very handsome, salt and peppered haired, tall gentleman was coming up the street. It turned out to be “Dr. J”, Julius Erving. He actually stopped and chatted with the vendor and myself for a few minutes, bought his hot dog and went on across the street. I too, did not want to be “that person” and had to keep reminding myself not to say or do anything stupid. I got to say that up close and personal, and in a charcoal gray suit that fit like a glove, Mr. Erving was gorgeous! I went back upstairs to work, and told ANYBODY who would stop and listen who I had seen. :)

I had dinner with Sean Connery at Le Bernardin in NYC. At least, that’s what I tell everybody–right before I tell them the truth, that is, Mr. Connery held the door for my friend and me as we exited the restaurant. A gentleman in addition to being gorgeous. I also saw Lauren Bacall discussing leaf lettuce with a clerk in the produce section at Grace’s Grocery on the upper east side. As I proceeded through the checkout line, I asked the twenty-something child at the cash register if Lauren Bacall shopped there often. She said, “Who’s Lauren Bacall?” Eeek! I’m old.

I saw Jonathan Crombie (aka Gilbert from the Megan Follows Anne of Green Gables) in the subway once. Just as cute, even if it was 15 years after the series.

I’m friends with a British actor — I worked for his father for several years — but he’s not famous here in the U.S. so I’ve never thought of him as a celebrity. To me he’s just like any other twenty-something guy. The few times I’ve seen a clip/episode from one of his movies/shows, it felt really strange. There was a kind of disconnect in my brain, and I couldn’t get into the show or movie because it was all too surreal. So I don’t even try to watch his stuff because it’s just a weird experience all around.

If I ever happened across a celebrity who I didn’t personally know, I’d probably think my eyes were playing tricks on me. I’d imagine it would be a very surreal experience.

I saw Tom Cruise and Paul Newman at Beni-Hana in Atlanta in 1986. Duran Duran going into a Holiday Inn at WVU in 1984. I did not speak or go to them either time. I really did not think that much about Tom or Paul at the time. They both were really short. HaHa
