What I’ve Done

TEST

Haley Powell wakes up covered in blood, with no memory of how she got where she is, where the blood came from, or why the boy she likes is lying dead just outside the door. Is the blood all his? Hers? Both? Why is she there? What happened? She’s mentally fuzzy because she’s missed her medication for her Addison’s disease, but surely being fuzzy doesn’t mean she’s a murderer?

Or does it?

While the forensic evidence is certainly piled against Haley, her attorney, Morgan Dane, is convinced Haley’s been framed. There’s just something about the slight young woman that doesn’t seem to fit the bill for “stabbing someone repeatedly and angrily”. The general public of the town, however, don’t agree and soon Morgan finds herself at the mercy of a series of attacks that shake her sense of safety, but not her resolve to exonerate Haley.

This is the fourth book in the series Ms. Leigh has penned about Morgan Dane, her PI boyfriend Lance, and Lance’s partner Sharp, and each is told at a breakneck pace that leaves my Kindle slightly bruised from how fast I stab the ‘turn page’ bit of the screen. As I read these in order, and the romance in particular builds each book (they all end with HFNs), I can’t speak to whether or not this is a stand-alone. A few of my fellow reviewers on other sites have said it can be, but if you’re a romantic suspense fan and haven’t read this series I’d highly recommend just starting from the beginning. They all have to do with some sort of violence against women – verbally, culturally, sexually, or physically – so be warned up front.

I have a standard policy against talking about plots of suspense novels beyond what’s revealed on the book jackets, and that definitely stands here. So what can I tell you about why it’s a DIK?

I read it breathlessly in one sitting and did not put all the puzzle pieces together until just before Morgan did. I wish I had a friend like Morgan and I am rooting so hard for her and Lance. I’m intrigued by Sharp’s history (which we delve into in this book in ways we haven’t before) and I hope we hear more from him in future works. I love that Morgan’s kids are humans and not plot devices, and I like that Morgan’s unhealthy habits (lives on caffeine and sugar, despite healthy Sharp’s best efforts) aren’t glossed over. Everyone in this world is a human and I trust Ms. Leigh that I should spend more time with them.

As I said before, if you like romantic suspense, you’ll like this series. If you’re not sure if you do, I’d recommend this as a good introduction to the genre. Light on the sex for the first few as Lance and Morgan are getting to know each other, but certainly not light on flirting or suspense.

  1. excellent book: interesting, funny dialogs, deep understanding of each character, interesting secondary characters, and also sexy.

Voracious reader, with a preference for sassy romances and happily ever afters. In a relationship with coffee, seeing whiskey on the side.
