Maggie Anderson is one of those women who’s never on the winning end. I feel that I know her, I feel that a lot of time she’s me. In her youth, she was blessed with poor skin, a figure that’s round and has always needed to lose 20 pounds. Really, nothing has hanged for her. She was the family reject then and, in many ways, successful as she is, she still feels the same way. She may be older but really, nothing’s changed about her, including her insecurities.
Dylan Black was the crush she had in high school. An “older man,” 23 to her 17, he was her sister’s boyfriend. Dylan loved Janet and was going to marry her until the day she told him she was marrying another man. He’d bought a wedding ring to give to Janet, to let them share their undying love, but instead, his dreams were crushed as he watched her walk down the aisle to marry another man.
On Janet’s wedding day, Dylan makes Maggie a promise. He tosses her the wedding ring and tells her, sometime when you want to go on a great adventure, bring this back to me and I’ll go with you.
Ten years later, that day comes. Maggie’s lost her job and her fiance and realizes that in 27 years, she’s done nothing with her life. She needs to grab hold of that golden ring and make her great escape. Will Dylan remember his promise to her? Will Dylan stand by it? There’s only one way to find out. She must track Dylan down.
Now this category romance packed a punch, and I loved every word of it. There’s no doubt that Maggie’s hiding something and Dylan grasps that right from the very start. He, too, is a little jaded with life and he needs to make some changes. Maggie offers him that opportunity by showing up on his doorstep unannounced. He’s willing to take the ring and start that big adventure with her and see where it leads.
This is one of the best little quick reads I’ve come across in awhile, even though I seem to say that about all of them these days. Maggie is a heroine you can relate to and Dylan is every woman’s idea of a bad boy hero all grown up. Dylan may have been a rebel in his youth but he grew up to be a real man. He wasn’t afraid to feel, and he wasn’t afraid to tell Maggie that she was a much better woman than many that he knew. I laughed with this one, and I cried too. Dylan fascinated me by his strength and his understanding of Maggie and let me dream a little bit that there are men like that out there. Maggie is hiding something, Dylan knows that but no matter what, he’ll stand by her. After all, he’s her friend.
I won’t give away any more of this story but let me just put it this way, I found Dylan to be a hero with a conscience and a big, warm heart. When I got to the end, I was sorry it was over but, like all great romances, they’ll live happily ever after in my heart.
