The Risk of Rogues

TEST

In The Risk of Rogues, Sabrina Jeffries latest, novella-length addition to her Sinful Suitors series, Lady Anne and Captain Lord Hartley Corry get a second chance at their happily ever after. They were, once upon a time, engaged and deeply in love, before Anne’s father forbade the union and Hartley fled to India. Upon Hartley’s return to England, the two run into each other and Hartley is shocked to find Anne unwed. As his feelings have never wavered, he starts his pursuit anew, but can Anne ever trust him again?

Novellas are always a gamble, aren’t they? I tend to only read ones where the relationship has been established before the story starts since I can’t generally buy a meet-cute, falling for each other, and HEA in the span of less than 200 pages. Second chances are my sweet spot, thought, especially when the reasons the couple was torn apart were beyond their control. Thus, I thought for sure I’d dig this story.

Instead, I found it fine. After a brief dance around each other and some emotional overtures I didn’t quite buy, Anne and Hartley get down to brass tacks and talk out their pasts and then consummate their love. I’m sure the conversation where they ironed out all of their misunderstandings and shared the version of their breakup with the other only lasted a few moments – but I felt it lasted several weeks at least and I was tempted to flip pages. I never connected with either of them and so struggled to root for their union.

I haven’t kept up with this series, and perhaps if I had that would have helped me feel a connection to these two, but as it stands, they fell out of my memory as soon as I finished the book.

  1. excellent book: interesting, funny dialogs, deep understanding of each character, interesting secondary characters, and also sexy.

Voracious reader, with a preference for sassy romances and happily ever afters. In a relationship with coffee, seeing whiskey on the side.
