In the small town of Flint, Ohio, the townsfolk have many secrets. Most recently, it’s the truth behind a string of serial murders, with Flint being only the most recent destination for the killer. The victims are paired off, one vampire and one human, and it looks more like a murder-suicide than anything else. But there are hunters involved, supernatural hunters, who know that there is more going on than it seems. Simon Hawthorne, vampire, and his friends are working to uncover the killer before the next victims are found.
Unfortunately for Simon, he has a bit of a complication, one Ben Leyton. Ben has only been in Flint a short while, but he and Simon were drawn to each other immediately. Ben knows that Simon has secrets, most people do, but he has no idea just how big those secrets are. If they are to survive the killer, and a ghost from Simon’s past, Ben needs to learn everything to keep himself safe.
There were things that worked well, and things that didn’t, but in the end I thought the book was pretty well balanced. It’s interesting to think of a vampire drinking human blood as an addiction. But being soul-bonded, love at first sight, etc… is a bit cliched in paranormals. However, Simon and Ben didn’t just fall into bed together, and it really nice to see a romantic couple actually talk about things before they became a problem. But then I didn’t really get how the whole town already knew about the various creatures of the night and accepted it (apparently Simon has been working at the same university for about 50 years, and no one has mentioned anything about how he never ages.)
Honestly, the things that bothered me the most were twofold: first, the Being Human-esque living arrangements of Simon and his friends – two vampires, a werewolf, and a ghost. Add in Ben and you have a bit of all the different mentioned races in town! Second, the villain and the mystery seemed under-utilized in the grand scheme of things. The end was a smidge anticlimactic, with how the mystery wrapped up, and the story just…ended. I don’t know exactly what I wanted, honestly, but I was expecting something a bit…more.
It’s an interesting version of the paranormal, though, and if you are already a fan of that subgenre, this looks to be a good one to spread your wings into a bit of romantic suspense.

I’m sorry about that. We don’t have any way to post British prices as an American based site.
