After the first frenzied read of a fan, I knew I considered Oracle’s Moon to be a DIK. But as a review should be from a less biased perspective, I knew I had to read it a second time with a whole new mindset. Searching for flaws that a fan would overlook, instead I found even more strengths that make this book a keeper.
Grace Andreas is the Oracle of Louisville. She has inherited the Power of prophesy when her sister died in a car accident. At the age of 23, Grace finds herself the holder of tremendous primeval power, responsible for an ancient tradition, and the guardian of her niece and nephew, Chloe and Max. Overwhelmed by the changes and the direction that her life has taken, the last thing she needs to deal with is an arrogant Djinn who has decided that he will become the family’s protector. Though she doesn’t really understand the great gift Khalil has offered her, or the reasons for it, she knows that she wants the Bane of her Existence gone.
Khalil is a powerful being that is pure energy. While he can take on any form, his truest self is pure essence. He is beyond ancient and time has very little meaning for him. The tragedy of his own daughter’s fate makes Khalil feel extremely protective of children in general, and very quickly, of Chloe and Max in particular. It doesn’t take long for this magical being, who has never marked the passage of time in his endless life, to treasure the time he spends with this fragile family.
As the Oracle of the Elder Races, Grace is soon caught up in the politics that shape the world. A political group has decided that Grace poses a threat to them because her power is too unpredictable and uncontrollable. As danger mounts from many different directions, the oracle’s moon rises and Grace is bombarded with all the possible ways that her future can play out. As she races to find the right direction to take, the biggest fear is that one wrong move will separate Grace and Khalil forever.
The love story between Grace and Khalil is just about perfect. The couple goes from antagonism to love in a totally believable way. As they realize that most of their antagonism stems from a complete lack of understanding, the two open up to one another and they take the time to learn about each other first. From there, the reader gets to watch the love between the two grow out of a genuine respect and caring that is not often seen and felt so vividly in a book. The power that Grace possesses as the Oracle is another important aspect of their romance. This power allows Grace to interact with Khalil in a way that no other human can and it explains so much about the attraction between them. And the love scenes when their energies and essences mingle? Steamy!
What I think is so spectacular about this book is that even though it is the fourth book in the series and the potential is always there for the story to become “been there, done that”, this book takes the now comfortable world of the Elder Races and shows a whole new side of it and it makes this book as groundbreaking as the first book in the series. The book is engaging and captivating, the writing is wonderful, and the characters are believable. If you aren’t a fan of the series, read this book and there’s a very good chance you’ll become one.
