Immortals: The Darkening

TEST

I wouldn’t call this book a romance per se; the author deems it a “sort of an urban fantasy”. While technically the hero and heroine have their happy ending, they both have other partners at points in the book, and spend much of their time running from crisis to crisis at a frantic pace. This is the second in the Immortals series, written by three different authors (one each by Robin T. Popp and Joy Nash and book-ended by Jennifer Ashley). I didn’t read the first book, by Ashley, which didn’t create a problem, but I don’t feel compelled to seek the others out when they are published later this summer.

Immortals are ancient warriors created to protect the human race. Apparently they have been forgotten until recently, but now they are needed to fight ultimate evil, and to summon them, they must be Called. About three weeks ago, werewolf Lexi Corvin helped her witch friends prepare a Summoning for an Immortal. Lexi saw the face of a handsome warrior in the flames, but he never came through the portal.

Darius has lived with his mother, the Goddess Sekhmet, in a place in between the worlds for hundreds of years. Since humans have not called the Immortals in a long while, he is bored. His brothers have been gone for centuries, and Sekhmet stole his Immortal life force in order to keep Darius from leaving. Since then, their relationship has been strained. When he cannot answer the Summoning, Darius is furious, and steals his life force back. In the resulting chaos, Sekhment places a spell on Darius that has some unfortunate side effects when he reaches Earth.

Lexi is a bounty hunter, and when Darius appears, she seems at a loss what to do with his muscular self. Darius hasn’t been on Earth since women covered themselves from head to toe, so he hopes that Lexi’s lack of clothing means she is free for hot sex. In fact, Lexi is free since she is a werewolf near the full moon, but chooses not to follow her lust for Darius, and decides to hunt down others for meaningless sex instead.

I felt zero connection to any character in this book. Lexi and Darius have no time to get to know each other, busy as they are chasing down evil demons, rogue Leprechauns, out of control vampires, and TSTL friends who make poor choices. They manage to fit in some supernatural sex, followed up by a Big Mis which was completely ridiculous, and was literally solved with one simple sentence from Darius.

By the time they mostly defeat the evil forces, (which are obviously not vanquished, or the rest of the books to follow would have nothing to work with) I was totally over this couple. I didn’t care if Darius and Lexi achieved their happy ending or not, just that I didn’t have to hang around with them any longer. Darius’s brother Tain was the only character remotely interesting to me, and hopefully he gets a better story written for him.

This is not a series I plan to continue with. Perhaps those who enjoyed the first book or are particular fans of the authors involved will find more enjoyment here than I did, but Immortals: The Darkening fell very far short of the mark for me.
