Hot Cop is a book about a hot cop. There is no deception here. It’s also about a hot librarian, and the hot sex she has with the hot cop. It is a thoroughly enjoyable novel that touches the line between really explicit contemporary and erotic romance.
Officer Chase Kelly is the titular hot cop, and he is, according to his coworkers, every stereotype of a bachelor officer. He’s known as Officer Good Times, deploying his Kelly Trio (dinner, drinks, and handcuffs) with women looking for fun, but the inherent dangers of his job have put him off having a family of his own. Meanwhile, Livia Ward is facing thirty and wants a baby. She asks Neighborhood Hot Cop to be the one to knock her up. Chase agrees.
I really liked Chase, who comes across effectively as someone maturing out of the party stage of life. I also felt that he read very authentically as a police officer. I believe one of the authors is married to one, so that may explain the detail. For instance, Chase judges every neighborhood by the calls he’s received there, and a scene in which Livia participates in a wet lab (basically, getting drunk so that officers can train on them in a controlled setting) is both funny and completely original.
The authors deftly navigated the challenging politics of the cop fantasy. They touch on race issues (Chase’s brother-in-law and beloved nephews are black) and harassment issues (Livia explicitly reflects that her back-of-the-cruiser hookup with Chase would be assault in real life, and Chase makes sure to check out of the scene to ask her for consent). What we readers are left with is the fun, hot fantasy.
And this book is hot. It sits right on the border between hot and burning, and which way it goes will probably be a matter of personal preference. Some things it does have: public fingering, public sex, role-playing, handcuffs. Some things it does not have: threesomes, anal. All of the sex scenes are well-written and character-focused, and the authors do an excellent job showing how this relationship, begun as hookups, becomes more intense over time.
The downsides of this book? Well, the legal aspect of Chase’s potential fatherhood isn’t accurate, and I felt like there was a scene missing that explained Livia’s conviction that everyone leaves, and her association of her pending thirtieth birthday with death. I kept waiting for a tragically lost fiancé, or something. As someone well on the dead side of thirty, without that detail, Livia’s obsession with ageing when she wasn’t even close to old, feels silly.
Overall, this book is great fun, which – for me – fills a gap in a subgenre where so many books become darker as they become hotter. These are two nice people having a very sexy time. If that’s what you’re looking for, pull over for Hot Cop.

It’s a fun one all right! Chase is certainly the neighborhood hot cop, but I did have issues with Livia’s 30=death equation. But this book was meant to be fun, so just go with it. The audio is even more fun!

It was, and that’s what I loved about it. It was nice to read characters having a really explicit good time rather than a really explicit tormented time, which I keep running into these days.
