TEST

In the conclusion of Ms. Chase’s popular Shaughnessy Brothers series about a sprawling band of siblings, attention turns to the only girl in the bunch. Darcy was raised in a world of all men after losing her mother at a young age and certainly bears the scars to prove it. At times both recalcitrant and endearing, Darcy is in between jobs when we meet her. Luckily for her, local artist Benjamin Tanner needs some help writing a book. While Darcy’s never done anything like that before, she’s a whiz at organization and is convinced that’s all Ben needs to get the project done. Instead of enemies-to-lovers, it’s more skeptics-to-lovers, but they find their happily ever after in the end.

Darcy Shaughnessy has been coddled and worshipped by her father and five older brothers and has never settled down into herself, which is achingly evident in her character. Darcy flits from job to job, trying to find her passion, while also showing evidence that she’s never really had to get to know people outside of her family and insular little world. The women her brothers have fallen in love with are one thing – the brothers serve as the bridge in the new relationships – but a brand new person? Much more challenging.

She’s in between passions when sister-in-law Suzannah puts her forward for a job helping a mountain-man-slash-artist write a book about his work. Darcy sets off to Ben’s home like an overeager puppy who has no concept that he doesn’t already adore her.

Spoiler: he does not.

Ben is an artist quite content to live a solitary life in the mountains with his art. He doesn’t trust easily, but had built a camaraderie with Suzannah on a previous project, so when he’s talked into writing a book, he agrees she can help. Her journalist training will help form the story, and she already knows his art and his space. When Darcy comes gallumping up instead, he is less than pleased.

Honestly, y’all, I cannot blame him. She’s a hard character to read and I never warmed to her. She’s a force of nature, which can be very charming, but also has the self-awareness of a teaspoon and rarely seems to be able to adapt her emotions to those around her. Their love story was a slow burn to begin with, but an even slower one for me, as I just kept wondering if he was only with her because the plot meant he had to be.

I have liked this series and so was interested in seeing how a full book with Darcy as a central character would work out. Sadly – it didn’t. However, for other invested fans of the series, this book serves as a wrap-up of the world and that may be enough for them. There is nothing overtly awful about Darcy – she just bugged me and that meant I wasn’t invested in her HEA. Maybe others will feel differently.

  1. excellent book: interesting, funny dialogs, deep understanding of each character, interesting secondary characters, and also sexy.

Voracious reader, with a preference for sassy romances and happily ever afters. In a relationship with coffee, seeing whiskey on the side.
