Highlander's Curse

TEST

The latest offering in the Daughters of the Glen series by Melissa Mayhue is a fun time travel with a touch of Fae magic. While it does not necessarily break any new ground, I still found it to be an enjoyable romp through medieval Scotland.

The future of Scotland hangs in the balance and Colin MacAlister is seriously eager to know the outcome of the war with England. He is so eager, in fact, that he seeks out a man who is rumored to have the gift of second sight bestowed upon him by the Fae. This is a big mistake as the seer is the lover of the Faerie Queen, who is none too pleased when Colin comes knocking at their love shack demanding to know the future. She curses Colin to feel the anguish of Souls who do not have their mate and informs him he will not find his mate in this lifetime.

Abigail Porter is poised to become a graduate student in archaeology. However, before beginning her Masters she accepts a job working for a wealthy gentleman excavating a site in Scotland. Unbeknownst to her, he is an evil Fae bent on using her for his own nefarious purposes. Faerie magic sends Colin and Abby on a journey through time as they attempt to evade the evil Fae and learn more about each other.

I believe this book worked well for me because it maintains a lighthearted tone. The story’s strength lies in its fun nature and a plot that moves quickly. It is fairly devoid of angst, though there are quite a few moments that are more serious, in particular when Colin acquires knowledge of the future and must decide how he may use this knowledge to alter the course of history.

Abby is a bit frustrating as a heroine as she is prone to the “too stupid to live” moments. For a graduate student in archaeology, she does some amazingly boneheaded things, such as insisting on riding into battle with Colin to warn his clansmen of an impending ambush by the English. Even the other characters remark on her lack of good common sense. I found myself frequently wanting to thump her on the head and tell her, “Think!”

If you are looking for a serious, detail-oriented time travel, stick with Diana Gabaldon. But if humor and a bit of Fae magic in a time travel romance are more to your liking, Highlander’s Curse may fit the bill.

  1. excellent book: interesting, funny dialogs, deep understanding of each character, interesting secondary characters, and also sexy.

I read romance of any sub-genre, but particularly love contemporaries. Well-written stories of any variety interest me though and I'm always on the hunt for my next favorite book. I love smart-mouthed heroines and tortured heroes, unusual time periods and just about anything medieval. On a personal note, I'm a political junkie, Cushing's Disease survivor, mom to 11 rescued dogs and too many cats to actually count.
