Double Dirty

TEST

Erotic romance author Jodi Redford is Queen of Kink. I became a fan of the prolific novelist after reviewing Triple Knockout, the third book in her Make Mine A Ménage. Her titillating dirty talk and explicit details bring to life a reader’s deepest sexual fantasies, some of which one may never have dreamed possible, so I was excited to receive an opportunity to review the newest book in her Kinky Chronicles series, Double Dirty. The deliciously naughty ‘off-limits’ romance is a bawdy good time. Redford pulls back the curtain on an intriguing erotic subculture comprised of male escorts, porn website rivalries, porn conventions, polyamory, and ‘boob artists’ who create art using their breasts. (Yes, this is real. I looked it up.) But although it’s undeniably arousing and entertaining, Double Dirty lacks a substantial love story and developed characters.

Artist and cartoonist Andie Norris secretly lusts after gorgeous brothers Sawyer and Knox Sullivan. Luckily for Andie, the Irish studs are secretly infatuated with her red-haired, green-eyed beauty. However, physical contact is avoided at all costs. Andie’s overprotective mother, Cherrie, is Sawyer and Knox’s manager at the Hunks For Hire escort agency and Andie knows that her mom would be furious if she were to become involved with the debaucherous brothers, known as “Double Dirty.” Sawyer and Knox fear Cherrie’s wrath, and possible unemployment, for introducing Andie to their kinky lifestyle.

Since Andie can’t satisfy her sexual fantasies in real life, she lives vicariously through her animated web series, Cocked and Loaded, on Kinky Jones’ porn site. The x-rated comedy features bumbling heroes, inspired by the Sullivans, who defeat their female enemies by consensually sexing them to death with their enormous penises. Redford includes episodes of the show that add a fun and flirty dimension to the story.

When truths are revealed and passions ignited, Andie enjoys mind-blowing threesomes with Sawyer and Knox, and she quickly realizes that she wants more than just multi-orgasmic pleasure from the brothers. She wants their love, but fears losing her heart.

My interest in Andie pretty much started and ended with her creative job as cartoonist and creator of a porn web show. Otherwise, Andie is a mildly engaging character who is often overcome by inexplicably strong emotions that result in tears and near physical collapse. As for the Sullivan brothers, there are too few differences between them for the reader to be able to tell them apart. They are both beautiful, sexually expressive men with mom issues and a propensity for using Gaelic vulgarities. (“gobshite,” “fecker,” and “arse” are noticeably overused.) Their most notable contributions to Andie’s life is their ability to ‘tag team’ her like nobody’s business. I actually cared the most about Andie’s quirky best friend and Kinky Jones web publisher, Millie. Redford reveals details about the mega rich, porn-obsessed recluse that instantly captured my imagination. And, Millie’s foul-mouthed parrot, Carl, is a hoot! (I very much look forward to reading Redford’s upcoming Kinky Jones, which features the eccentric Millie.)

Stepping into the sexually permissive world inhabited by Andie, Millie, and the Sullivans is wonderfully liberating. Titillating dirty talk and hard-core sex acts are more mundane than taboo, and Redford writes them both with great skill. Sawyer and Knox clearly have a predilection for engaging in ménages à trois together, but their sexual motivations are vague. It would have deepened my emotional investment in the Sullivans had I better understood the ways in which they find fulfillment in sharing the same woman.

Double Dirty supremely satisfies in the erotic category, but is less successful in delivering a believable love story. The reader is told, and not shown, that Andie has an existing friendship with Sawyer and Knox, rather than given any concrete evidence for its existence. When Andie and the brothers suddenly fall hard for each other, the reader is told this fact, but again, no discernible reasons are supplied. In fact, the genuine affection between close friends Andie and Millie is felt more profoundly on the page than the supposed love between Andie and the Sullivans.

In spite of the novel’s one-dimensional storytelling and its neat and tidy ending, Double Dirty is a wicked read for erotic romance-lite readers who enjoy m/m/f kink and ribald humor.

My soul-deep love of poly has put this on my TBR pile.

Unfortunately, the whole thing about two brothers doing the deed with the heroine in a threesome treads too close to incest for me, whether or not they are doing it with each other. So for me, this is a definite skip.

For an interesting take on an m/f/m ménage featuring a woman and two brothers (twins), I recommend Charlotte Stein’s DOUBLED.
