Prior to reading Disturbing His Peace, I had never read a police romance; and after devouring this one, I cannot believe I have missed out on such a glorious sub-genre. I tend to shy away from alpha-male romance heroes, so cop romances usually fall into the ‘way too manly’ category for me, but Tessa Bailey writes her hero with a mastery that allows him to be both strong and emotional, forthright yet reserved – in a word, human! Full of drama, emotion, and hot, hot sex, this book had me completely gripped from the get-go, and I couldn’t put it down.
The novel follows the story of Danika Silva and Greer Burns. Danika is almost finished her training to be a New York City police officer, but dreads her weekly training sessions with Lieutenant Greer Burns, a total hardass she might be just a little attracted to. When she gets involved in a dangerous situation and calls Greer to the rescue, he’s outraged at her recklessness and puts her on probation, which, coincidentally, involves her spending lots of time with him. With each phone call to check in and each ride in Greer’s cruiser, the sexual tension between them continues to build.
Part of what makes this book so wonderful is that Greer and Danika both follow and break the types to which they belong. While Greer seems at first glance to be an alpha, dominant, feelings-make-me-mad hero, he’s also sweet, sensitive, supportive, loving, and a total family man. Danika at first read is a strong, determined leader and alpha female, but she’s also a great teammate, a consenting submissive, and goes above and beyond to support her family and friends. Greer and Danika are both complex and relatable characters, and the way they develop throughout the story made me truly invested in seeing their relationship unfold to its eventual happy ending.
I also love the close friendships that Danika has with her male roommates and their girlfriends. Jack and Charlie are protective of her, but they also know that she can totally handle herself and doesn’t need their protection, and their girlfriends ensure that Danika gets the chance to exercise the emotional side she can’t show to her family or roommates. I love it when books hook me in with the background characters as well as the hero and heroine, and this book did just that, making me really excited to read more of the Academy series.
The sex scenes in this book are very well written. Though Greer is the more sexually dominant of the two, both he and Danika are clear about what they want from each other, and he’s not afraid to let her take control. There is a particular scene in a patrol car that is definitely the hottest sex scene I’ve read in 2018 so far.
If you want a book so good you’ll pull an all-nighter to finish it, read Disturbing His Peace. I enjoyed every moment of it, and felt a bit bereft when it ended.
