Beauty Dates the Beast

TEST

Reading books like this debut makes reviewing a joy. Finding a promising new author is not only like getting an expensive box of hand-dipped Belgian chocolates and being assured none of the calories will transfer to you, but also that you can share them with the world. Ecstasy for a reviewer!

Human Bathsheba Ward has spent her life protecting her werewolf sister Sara, who is wanted by almost every wolf pack especially those top-heavy with male members. Sara, younger and more frail than Bathsheba, has moved with her across the country dodging the packs when they become aware of the unaffiliated werewolf.

Now in Ft. Worth, Texas, the stepsisters are working for Midnight Liaisons, a dating service for shifters and other paranormals who belong to the Alliance in the city. The Paranormal Alliance is a group designed to bring together lone shifters and other non-humans for protection against the werewolves and vampires who outnumber them.

Tonight, Bathsheba has a problem. The date of a VIP Alliance member, werecougar Beau Russell, whose father founded the group, has unexpectedly cancelled. Bath can’t find the man another date. He keeps insisting he wants to take her out, but humans aren’t supposed to date Alliance members (or any non-humans, without a permit). Bath knows her boss Giselle will be furious if she turns Beau away, but she will be equally furious if Bath goes out with him. Deciding the date is the lesser of the two evils, Bath goes out with  Beau, and they have a wonderful time. But all hell breaks loose in the city’s paranormal ranks.

Afterward, something begins stalking Bath, her sister, or both of them. Bath is afraid it’s the local werewolves, and Beau, enamored with her, decides to be their protector. He brings Bath home with him to his secluded cabin in the woods and sends Sara off with werebear Ramsey as her protector.

The interaction between Bathsheba and Beau makes this book sparkle. Having protected Sara for so long, she includes Beau under her umbrella of care. Powerful Beau, on his part, is at first amused, then shocked that a mere human thinks she can save him in difficult situations. In fact, all the characters, whether prominent or very minor, are beautifully rendered and their motivations believable.

Sims also skillfully moves back and forth from romance to suspense and keeps a complicated plot and its intriguing nuances understandable and relevant. Not only will this book appeal to readers of paranormal romance, but also to those who enjoy suspense and contemporaries.

I for one can’t wait to read the next book about Sara and Ramsey that is coming out in the fall of 2012.
