A Slip in Time

TEST

Is this a paranormal? Is this a time travel? Is this a mystery? The answer is a little of each. A Slip in Time can be seen as a straight time travel, but here the stress is more on the process than the actual event. Whatever it is, A Slip in Time is a captivating read, despite its flaws.

A fissure in the time between the years 1893 and 1437 opens in Dunraven Castle, and people can pass through under certain circumstances. This is what happens to 19th century Julia, the proverbial poor relative, and Rae Mckinnon, laird of Dunraven, in 1437. Gradually they grow to know and love each other, making the best of the fleeting moments they have together. In 1893, Julia and the incumbent laird realize that Rae faces a gruesome death. Should they interfere? And even if Julia wishes to help, what could they do?

Rae is a sensitive and capable man for his time. He is willing to go along with the inexplicable both out of a sense of duty to his family, and adventurousness. Julia comes into her own when being gradually removed from her oppressive relatives. Being singled out by Rae makes her realize her own abilities and innate courage. Her self-esteem is also helped considerably by her treatment by the current laird.

A Slip in Time doesn’t delve into the deeper psyche of the characters or the intricacies of Scotland in the 15th and 19th century, although the author feels at home in both eras. The story is quite straightforward without any major detours. This makes for a quick and enjoyable read. However, the readability is hampered by a tendency to overly emotive prose. Some sentences are chopped up. Like this, and nice things feel sooo good. If gothic-style drama isn’t your thing, you might want to pass this one by, but, in all, this is a nice read.

Dealing with two past periods at the same time can be like juggling too many balls. Author Kirkwood manages to keep most of them in the air, mainly because the airy nature of the romance. A Slip in Time is fun and exciting in a “matinee movie” manner. I found even the somber, mysterious sections of the book more amusing than serious, but tastes vary. If you like time travel romance or paranormal romance, and have a soft spot for books that read like they should have been set in Transylvania, A Slip in Time will definitely deliver.
