I just love reunion stories. Be it two childhood friends who got back together only to realize there is a romantic spark between them, or two exes who bumped into each other and found their relationship wasn’t over — either way, I love them. That’s why, when I saw that A Fighting Chance was a novella about two exes reunited, I jumped at the chance to review it.
Adeline (Del) Kendrick is in Vegas for a bachelorette party, but she arrived a day early to give herself a bit of a vacation first. That time alone prompts her to do something she’d never have dreamed of if her friends were around and she goes to see her ex-boyfriend in an MMA match. Brendan wasn’t a fighter when Del knew him, but it seems things have changed over the last few years, and she’s interested to see who he is now.
Brendan Quinn, for his part, has never forgotten Adeline. Although he was the one who broke up with her (positively shattering poor Del’s heart), he was never really ready for the relationship to end. It’s just that her father told him that a mere construction worker wouldn’t ultimately satisfy his daughter, so Brendan ended things abruptly in order to save them a drawn-out breakup. But upon seeing Del again and realizing she’s still single, he decides to seize the day and give their relationship one more try. It takes a fair amount of wooing, but by the end of the story he and Del both agree that they’re soulmates.
Novellas are short, sweet, and when written by a good author, never leave you feeling like the story was shortchanged. That’s the case here, and by making Del and Brendan ex-lovers, Ms. Stacey was able to forego the normal courting rituals. Even though A Fighting Chance only covers a short span of time, I never worried that Del and Brendan were jumping into things too quickly. They’re likeable people who clearly know each other well, and have missed each other for quite some time, so it’s a pleasure to see them get their relationship back on track.
A Fighting Chance is, for me, another example of Ms. Stacey’s consistently excellent writing. I trust her as a writer and this has only cemented that trust.
