My favorite paranormal romances are the funny ones: No larger-than-life heroes that take themselves too seriously, no heroines that can’t wait to be bonded, no destruction of the world looming. Instead, I like amusing little magics and the zany situations that occur when you throw magical elements into the mundane world. This explains why I like Linda Wisdom’s books and looked forward a lot to her newest, A Demon Does It Better. 
Lili Carter is a witch-healer, a doctor for supernatural beings, and she has just accepted a job at San Francisco’s Crying Souls Hospital. She used to work there a century ago, and has returned now because a friend of hers from Chicago. disappeared soon after taking a nursing job at Crying Souls, and Lili wants to find out what has become of her. Although for the most part all seems well at the hospital, Lili’s boss keeps a number of deeply disturbed patients in seclusion in a special and grisly ward in the basement, and the head nurse is a dragon. On the other hand, Lili finds a new friend and ally in friendly Deisphe, a wereleopard nurse.
While Lili is shopping at a magical plane just outside the real world, she becomes aware of a most handsome and fascinating man, who helps her to choose a perfume.
The man is Jared, a shadow demon who can use the shadows to move unhindered from place to place. This ability comes extremely useful, because Jared’s body is incarcerated in the hospital’s basement ward, as punishment for slaughtering a whole vampire clan in a bout of insanity. Jared has fallen in love with Lili at first sight and tries to see her as often as he can with the help of his shadow magic. Lili, on the other hand, finds it hard to believe the gentle man she meets outside the hospital is the same the deranged criminal of whom her boss warns her.
As is typical for a Linda Wisdom paranormal romance, cute secondary characters and funny moments abound. Lili’s familiar is a cat named Cleo who is in fact Queen Cleopatra. Then there is Deisphe the wereleopard, and several of Lili’s fellow witches, some of whom starred in earlier books of the series. The world-building is charming while sometimes bordering on the cutesy, as usual with Linda Wisdom paranormals. I happen to like it.
Jared is a sweetie. He is just not, well, very demonic. Most of the time, he’s charming, considerate, a great guy to have around. Imprisoned in the hospital ward, he’s also suffering powerlessly quite a bit of time. We hear that he committed mass murder, and close to the end he gets very angry indeed. But what we are mostly shown is a nice guy. If you happen to enjoy this kind of hero in a paranormal you may like him very much; if you insist on brooding alphas, this is the wrong romance for you.
A Demon Does It Better is an amusing read and ideal for cuddling up on the sofa on an evening when you just don’t want to read anything weighty.
