Autumn fruit
While I am a bit sorry the days are getting shorter, I revel in the wonderful fruit this season provides. This morning I got a delivery of apples, pears and grapes. Not to forget damsons and plums. Delicious!
A colleague of mine owns three apple trees and has given me several kilos of windfall, which I have made into apple sauce and put into the freezer. My next plan is to make damson jam, and possibly even pear jam. If I don’t find the time for all this jam-making, I just prepare the fruit and dump them into the freezer.
What are your favorite fruits of autumn? Do you do anything special with them?

Bessie, that Dutch Apple Pancake sounds really tasty!
I make a Dutch Apple Pancake. I found the recipe in a Watkins catalog years ago. It’s very simple–the pancake is make from eggs, a little sugar and flour. You bake it in a deep dish pie pan and it puffs up. The apples are sliced and sauteed in butter with a little sugar and a tablespoon or two of lemon juice. The center of the puffed up pancake collapses and you spoon the apples into the cavity.
I also go to fall festivals looking for the perfect apple dumpling. Around here though, this caramel apple is absolute best:

Linnie, gotta love Jiffy — very affordable but reliably tasty. And I love pears, so I’ll eat your portion of pears :-)
My mom and I made a really simple but very tasty and nutritious dessert. We tossed together a variety of fresh fruits — sliced apple, pear, red and green seedless grapes — dotted it with a wee bit of butter, sprinkled it with some cinnamon (and maybe a bit of nutmeg, too, I don’t remember), added a splash of vanilla, and baked it. Yummy just warm as it was…also delicious over ice cream and it would be tasty with pancakes or crepes, as well.
I’m not a big fan of pears, but I do love apples and grapes. I mostly just eat both just plain, without doing anything to them, but once in awhile will make baked apples (stuffed with brown sugar and raisins). And sometimes, I’ll make apple crumble. Mine’s a really simple dish. I just slice up apples in a pan, and then top with some Jiffy white cake mix (cheap, cheap cake mix for those not in U.S.) mixed with a bit of butter or margarine. I bake it until the topping starts turning brown, and it’s delicious.
