And the Hits Just Keep on Coming…

It’s been reported at various locations across Romanceland that both Harpercollins (home of Avon) and Penguin have announced wage freezes.  From what I understand, HC originally announced a freeze through January, but it looks like the pay freeze will now extend into July 2009, and HC has not ruled out the possibility of cutting jobs.

Penguin hasn’t ruled out the possibility of cutting jobs either and in a memo circulated today, Chairman John Makinson announced a pay freeze for all employees earning $50,000 or more, describing conditions as “the most challenging economic environment that any of us has ever experienced“.

Still hoping for a silver lining….

Oh, Danielle – I’m sorry to hear that news. It certainly doesn’t seem fair, and these situations are making for stressful times for so many people. I find that I’ve been treasuring my good reads even more this year as a nice break!

My husband come home the other night and said that their raises that they usually get in April have been pushed back to September. On my last job the bigwigs voted themselves in a four year raise and then when the new budget came out we were told that we were not getting a cost of living/raise that year. This went on for 2 years — in the meantime the bigwigs received 4% raises. Go figure — who actually does the work? Take abuse from customers? Certainly not the bigwigs.

I don’t think anyone will be spared. The question now is what to do moving forward, both as a country and as individuals. I’ve always hated BS silver linings, but I think this truly will be a chance for everyone to soul search, reevaulate what’s important, and become more actualized humans. Here’s hoping…
